The Home Economics Department would like to welcome Ms Webb, a Pre-Service Teacher from Murdoch University who has been working alongside us for the past few weeks in our lower school cooking classes and Certificate II Hospitality classes. We wish Ms Webb all the best for her future in education.
The Year 8 Fabulous Food classes have been analysing recipes and the information a well-written recipe can provide the cook for success in the kitchen. With a focus on Fried Rice, they completed a written investigation then put their theory into practice and prepared Easy Fried Rice to complete the assessment.
The Year 9s in Food for the Future have now completed their major assessment for the semester, a Stir Fry Design Brief. Students collaborated in small groups to investigate different types of stir fries and then they designed and cooked their masterpiece in class. Students had to work within certain parameters such as budget, ingredient selection and time management. The assessment concluded with a validation test, covering questions such as nutrition, sensory analysis and sustainability.
The Year 10 Food for Entertaining students have been creative in the kitchen! In small groups, they prepared a sponge cake, in their chosen size and shape. During the next lesson, they decorated their sponge cakes from the design the group agreed upon. It was a dynamic lesson on time management, collaboration and of course creativity! An individual validation test was also conducted to check the student’s understanding of food costing, sensory analysis and the design process.
In Certificate II Hospitality the Year 11 students hosted Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea which is a wonderful fundraiser to support the Cancer Council. The students worked extremely hard preparing food leading up to the event and on the day, they presented the food and were hosts, servers and baristas to the staff that donated to the charity. It was a terrific success, with Applecross SHS raising $920.55 for the Cancer Council.
The Year 12 students hosted numerous Bagel Brunches for staff earlier this term. Guests were treated to a sit-down brunch in the Green Apple Café where they were able to choose a bagel with fillings of their choice and of course barista coffee. It was a great way for the staff of Applecross to start their day whilst giving the Certificate II Hospitality students the service experience required for the course.
Year 12’s in Children, Family and the Community have investigated the needs of pre-term babies, and the challenges families may face when caring for a newborn. The students have sewn baby blankets to donate to Tiny Sparks WA which is “Western Australia’s premier charity for high-risk pregnancies and babies born sick or premature”.
