VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies

Our Year 11 and 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies students participated in a fantastic day of mountain biking at Big Hill MTB Park in Mount Beauty. We were fortunate to enjoy perfect weather, which made for ideal riding conditions.

Students were split into two groups based on experience. The beginner and intermediate group explored the scenic trails of Shady Gully and Survey Track, while the advanced group took on some of Mount Beauty’s iconic trails, including the SS, Cranky Charlie Loop, The Claw, and Bananarama.

Throughout the day, students enhanced their mountain biking skills and participated in discussions about the environmental impacts of mountain biking, as well as the land management strategies used at Big Hill to minimise these effects. The experience provided meaningful, real-world connections to our course content and allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical context.

A huge thank you to Marie Edwards and Dave Angelini for generously volunteering their time and expertise. They took on the roles of group leaders, mechanics, and all-round MTB guides, helping ensure students were supported and safe on the trails.

We also extend our gratitude to Mr Harris, Mr Greenhalgh, and Ms Levesque for giving up their planning and lunch breaks to drive the uplift vehicle – a key part of making the day possible. Special thanks to Team Mount Beauty for the generous loan of their trailer and to everyone who helped prepare and serve a much-appreciated cheeseburger lunch.

Thank you to all the students who embraced the opportunity and contributed to the success of the day. Experiences like this are a valuable component of our Outdoor Education program, providing students with opportunities to connect with the environment and each other.

We hope the day has inspired students to continue developing their mountain biking skills and to make the most of the incredible facilities at Big Hill MTB Park. A student-led “Bikes and BBQ” session once a month could be a great way to stay active, nurture lifelong friendships beyond school, and build a lasting connection with the outdoors.

Mr C and Ms Janson.

VCE Art Creative Practice

Unit 1/2 students are using the work of other artists as a starting point to investigate, explore, and experiment with three different art forms. This is the students third artform - printmaking.

Seasons of Excellence

Year 11 and 12 students from Art Creative Practice, Visual Design Communication and Product Design visited the National Gallery of Victoria earlier in the term and had hands-on access to the artists’ visual journals, sketchbooks and folios. They gained a unique insight in to how some of Victoria’s top art students from 2024 developed their ideas, explored materials and techniques, and resolved their final artworks.

The students also visited Top Designs at the Melbourne Museum where they viewed various final pieces and folio's to gain insight into the construction of high quality folio's and artworks. It was a very busy and fun packed day in Melbourne.

This day trip also offers a chance for students to explore their creativity. Evelyn's talent is displayed below in the photos she composed. Thanks for your contribution to the newsletter.
