What’s Coming Up in Careers at Boorowa Central
Year 10 Work Experience – Starting 16 June
Year 10 students will be heading out on work experience in just under two weeks, beginning Monday 16 June. I encourage all parents and carers to have a conversation with their child about where they would like to complete their placement, if they haven’t already made arrangements.
Work experience is a valuable opportunity for students to explore a career they are seriously considering after school. It is especially beneficial for those thinking about an apprenticeship or traineeship, as it can lead into a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) in Year 11 and 12.
If you have any questions or need assistance with placements, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Career Spotlight:
Pathways to Study Medicine or Dentistry in NSW
Are you considering a career as a doctor or dentist? These highly respected and rewarding professions require dedication, strong academic performance, and careful planning during your senior years of high school.
Here’s a breakdown of the key steps involved in pursuing Medicine or Dentistry:
Step 1: Choose the Right Subjects in Year 11 and 12
- While no specific subjects are required, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English Advanced are strongly recommended.
- These subjects will help build your scientific knowledge and prepare you for the academic rigour of a university medical or dental degree.
Step 2: Achieve a High ATAR
- Entry into undergraduate Medicine and Dentistry programs is extremely competitive. Most universities require an ATAR of 95+, with some needing 99+ (especially for Medicine at UNSW or JMP at the University of Newcastle).
- Some universities may consider rural or equity adjustments, so it’s worth checking eligibility for schemes like the Rural Entry Scheme or Educational Access Scheme (EAS).
Step 3: Sit the UCAT ANZ Exam
- To apply for undergraduate Medicine or Dentistry, students must sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) in Year 12 (registration opens in March; test is taken between July–August).
- The UCAT assesses cognitive ability, emotional intelligence, and professionalism – all vital for success in health professions.
Step 4: Apply and Attend Interviews
- Some universities shortlist applicants for an interview based on their ATAR + UCAT score.
- These interviews assess communication skills, ethical reasoning, and motivation for studying Medicine or Dentistry.
Where Can You Study Medicine or Dentistry in NSW?
Medicine:
- UNSW Sydney – Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine (ATAR ~96+ + UCAT + Interview)
- University of Newcastle / UNE – Joint Medical Program (ATAR ~94+ + UCAT + Interview)

Dentistry:
- Charles Sturt University (Orange) – Bachelor of Dental Science (ATAR ~95+ + UCAT + Interview)
- University of Sydney – Graduate Entry Only (Requires an undergraduate degree first, plus GAMSAT and interview)
Alternate Pathways
- Graduate Medicine: Students can study for a related degree (e.g., Biomedical Science or Nursing) or an unrelated degree (e.g., music, arts or business) and then apply for postgraduate medicine through the GAMSAT.
- Pathway Programs: Some universities offer Indigenous, rural, or equity pathway programs with alternate selection criteria.

- Gain experience – volunteering, first aid certificates, or work experience in a health-related setting can show genuine interest.
