Term 2 Information

SACSSGSA are currently in the process of regrading sports teams and will release the fixtures for the remainder of the season at the beginning of Week 7.  The draws will be emailed to all teams and placed on Loreto Connect once they are finalised.

Reconciliation Round

Last week was the reconciliation round in the SACSSGSA and IGSSA sport competitions.

The 2025 theme for National Reconciliation Week is Bridging Now to Next, calling on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead, and to continue to push forward as past lessons guide us. Sport plays a powerful role in bringing people together, strengthening relationships, and fostering a spirit of inclusivity. Reconciliation Round is about more than just competition between schools. It’s an opportunity for players, coaches, and spectators to stand together in recognition of Reconciliation and the ongoing journey toward unity and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

In Round 4, students were encouraged to wear red, black, or yellow ribbons or socks in support of the reconciliation round.  They also acknowledged The Traditional Owners of the Land at Loreto College.

Cross Country

Over the past month, many Loreto students from Years 4 to 12 have proudly represented the school in the SAAS Cross Country competitions. If your daughter enjoys running or is keen to boost her fitness, she is welcome to join our Monday morning training sessions from 7:30am to 8:15am or take part in the weekly Wednesday races.

We would especially love to see a strong Loreto turnout on Wednesday 11 June, when we have the honour of hosting the event.

If you would like further information about our running program, please feel free to contact Sophie Hage - Sophie.Hage@loreto.sa.edu.au

Aerobics

We are incredibly proud of our aerobics teams for their dedication and hard work throughout the season. As they prepare to compete, we wish our talented aerobics students all the best for the FISAF State Championships on Saturday 14 June. We know they will represent our school with skill, determination, and team spirit. Good luck to all participants!

Knockout Sport

  • Years 10–12 AFLW The team competed in Round 1 on Monday 26 May (Week 5), playing three competitive games and securing two impressive wins. Despite facing freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and strong winds, the team’s spirit and determination was amazing — we couldn’t be prouder!
  • Years 11/12 Netball On Thursday, 29 May (Week 5), the team competed against Mary MacKillop College and St Aloysius College. They delivered outstanding performances, winning both games and progressing to the second round of the competition. Congratulations to all the girls on a fantastic day of netball!

Thunderbird Sessions

Our students have continued to enjoy netball training sessions led by Thunderbirds players, Matilda Garrett, Lauren Frew and coach Cathy Fellows. Our students are incredibly lucky to learn from elite athletes and a top-level coach, gaining insights into high-performance netball directly from the Thunderbirds team. Through these sessions, they’ve developed their skills, teamwork, and game understanding while being inspired by role models in the sport.

SAPSASA Netball

Congratulations to Year 6 students Everly, Charlotte, Paloma, Sophie and Bella who have all been selected for SAPSASA netball this winter!

The girls will represent the East Adelaide SAPSASA District in the upcoming State Netball Carnival, from Wednesday June 18 to Friday June 20.

Close to 80 players from local schools attended the East Adelaide trial sessions over the last three weeks. There was a nervous wait each week as numbers were trimmed. The trial standard was particularly high and the girls should be very proud of their efforts.

This will be a terrific opportunity to play in a high-standard competition and to make some new friends.

Many thanks also to Megan who has been coaching some of these girls since Year 2!

SAPSASA Cross Country

Well done to Sophie and Emily who represented the East Adelaide SAPSASA zone at the State Cross Country Championship at Oakbank yesterday. Sophie finished 42nd in the 12 year old girls age group out of 211 competitors, racing over 3km. Emily finished 50th in the 10 year old girls age group out of 173 competitors, racing over 2km.

Spirit of the game

Well done to our Year 3 soccer team for their excellent attitude last Friday.

The school we were playing against were very short of players. Instead of them forfeiting or having to reduce the game to 5 vs 5 instead of the usual 7 vs 7, our players took turns playing for them.

Our coach Vanessa and I didn’t make them do this – we gave them the choice. Sometimes kids are a bit reluctant to play for the opposition, but the Loreto girls jumped at the chance. They all took their turn and played their hearts out for the other team.

The coach and parents from the opposition school were very impressed. It reflected really well on Loreto and the girls should be proud of their attitude. Any time on the field is valuable and is a chance to improve their skills. Doing this meant that we got to play a full game with no one on the sidelines.

The game itself was very exciting. Scores were tied 2-2 at the halfway point. Some oranges during the halftime break gave us the energy boost we needed, winners 4-2!

Well done, girls!

AFLW vs Scotch

Well done to our Year 4/5/6 team who had an exciting 8 point win over Scotch on Tuesday, 8.5 (53) to 7.3 (45). Everyone played well and it is great to see teamwork developing and players being prepared to share the ball around. Evie starred up forward, kicking 5 goals including one brilliant snap from the boundary.

Thunderbirds training

On Monday it was our Year 5 and 6 netball teams who had their chance to train with Lauren Frew from the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Lauren took the teams through some warm-up activities, leading drills and goal shooting. Afterwards students had the chance for photographs and autographs – Lauren was very generous with her time which is much appreciated.

An early heads up… Year 2 Netball

Our Year 2s have been biding their time, patiently watching the older students and in some cases older sisters strut their stuff out on the netball court.

In Term 4 our Year 2s will finally be unleashed!

Our Year 2s will have the chance to play summer netball for the school in Term 4. We play in the Eastern Districts Netball Association’s Friday night competition. Matches will start in Term 4 with the summer season running into Term 1 2025. The Year 2s play under the “Netta” introductory rules with lower rings and smaller netballs.

Registrations to play will open mid-way through Term 3 with some ‘preseason’ trainings held in late September. During the season the times will be:

  • Trainings on Monday afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm in the Loreto gym
  • Matches on Friday evenings, 5:30pm start at venues in the eastern suburbs

If there are any parents who would be interested in coaching, please contact Ben Johnswood at Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

Student Achievements

Good luck to Year 6 students Amelia and Quinn who are away this weekend with their club basketball team at the National Junior Classic event in Melbourne.

Well done to Year 5 Evie who competed at the Immanuel Short Course Swimming Carnival over the weekend, representing Norwood Swimming Club. Evie competed in 4 events gaining PB’s in 3 of them. She also managed to win her first medal representing the club, coming second in the 100m breaststroke. After coming 4th at her last meet, she was over the moon to snag a medal and a new PB. The chocolate crackle post-race was pretty good too!!

Year 5 Musical

Get ready to tumble down the rabbit hole! Our Year 5 students have been busy preparing to bring the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland to life, with curious characters, mad tea parties, and a little bit of nonsense. We can’t wait to share the wonder and would love to welcome as many as we can to our very own Wonderland in Week 9! Tickets are on sale now with both Matinee and Evening performances available: https://events.humanitix.com/loretoaiw

Grandparents' Day

Last week Wicked was really brought to life by our Junior School Students. With a 54 strong choir of year 3-6 students led by Ms Baldwin belting out songs from Wicked with everything they had, our Gym was filled with the joy of music. Their energy, passion and joy were infectious to their whole audience and it was a real reminder to all how music can connect, uplift, and empower us all.

The Frog Prince

This week, our Preschool, Reception, and Year 1 students had a truly enchanting experience as they attended the State Opera of South Australia's delightful performance of The Frog Prince. Held in the St Anne's Performing Arts Centre, the performance brought the beloved fairy tale to life through music, colourful costumes, and engaging storytelling.

For many of our youngest students, it was their very first time attending a live opera—and the excitement was palpable! The children were captivated by the performers and the magical world on stage, and they especially enjoyed the fun twists in this musical retelling of the classic tale.

We are so proud of how beautifully our students represented the school, showing wonderful listening skills and theatre manners. A big thank you to the staff who made this special incursion possible. It was a memorable cultural experience we’re sure the children will talk about for weeks to come!
