World Environment Day – Beanies and Blankets – Acts of Service!
For the third winter in row, students in the Junior and Senior school have been combining two initiatives. One that highlights ecological justice, the other social justice. When students take part in initiatives like collecting ‘blankets and beanies’ for those experiencing homelessness, or serving at a drop-in morning tea, they are doing more than just helping others, they are becoming more compassionate, aware, and connected individuals.
In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to become focused on personal goals and achievements. Acts of service remind students that there are people in our communities who struggle with basic needs such as warmth, food, and companionship. Donating a blanket or a beanie may seem like a small act, but to someone feeling the pinch of heating bills, or needing a warm jacket on a cold night, it can make a world of difference. Serving tea, offering a smile, and taking time to sit and listen may be simple gestures, but they affirm the dignity of those who are often overlooked.
For our young people, these experiences also help build empathy and a deeper understanding of the social challenges around them. It encourages them to reflect on their own privilege and to consider how they can use it for good. Giving teaches responsibility, strengthens the values of justice and kindness, and builds their sense of community.
By giving to others in small ways, our students are not only helping to create a more just and compassionate society, but they are also becoming the kind of people the world needs: people who are thoughtful, generous, and aware.

Our Liturgical Life
Year 3 Blue led a liturgy focused on the theme of reconciliation, acknowledging the importance of healing and unity with our First Nations peoples. Students showed a deep respect for the occasion, leading prayers and readings that honoured the past and expressed hope for a more inclusive future.
On Tuesday, week 5, Year 7 students led a special Chapel Mass centred on the same theme of National Reconciliation Week. The Mass was celebrated by our parish priest, Fr Chris Jenkins who encouraged students to continue building bridges of understanding and respect within their communities.
Year 6 Gold hosted a thoughtful liturgy focusing on the 2025 theme: "Ending Plastic Pollution". Their message highlighted the message of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si and the importance of environmental care and social justice, reminding us that stewardship of creation goes hand in hand with caring for those most impacted by environmental degradation. Following the World Environment Day liturgy, Junior School Social Justice Leaders addressed the school community, outlining upcoming initiatives including Blanket and Beanie Day and the Vinnies Winter Appeal. They spoke passionately about the need to support those experiencing homelessness and hardship during the colder months and encouraged everyone to contribute by donating warm clothing and essential items.
Together, these liturgies and student-led actions demonstrate the spirit of compassion and justice that underpins our school values.
RE Curriculum Junior School
Junior School staff participated in professional development focused on strengthening the Religious Education Crossways curriculum. The session explored effective ways to incorporate Scripture into units of work, helping students to engage more deeply with Biblical texts and apply Gospel values to real-life contexts. As part of this PD, staff also interacted with AI tools to generate fresh insights, develop lesson ideas, and enhance planning, embracing technology as a creative partner in faith-based learning.
This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering meaningful, innovative, and faith-informed learning experiences across all year levels.
