Sowing the SEADs of Success

Pink and Green Day 2025

Today, we wear pink and green in honour of Ava Lynch - a bright light in our community whose courage, kindness, and spirit continue to inspire us every day.

Ava’s legacy reminds us of the power of compassion and unity, and today we come together in colour, purpose, and action.

Every donation and every conversation help bring us closer to a future where no child has to face DIPG alone.

By supporting RunDIPG, we are raising funds for critical research and awareness around Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) - a devastating childhood brain cancer.

Today we celebrate Ava's life.

Power of Volunteering: it's good for Wellbeing and Engagement

We must teach our young people to volunteer and provide them with opportunities to "give back" for many reasons including benefits to their own Wellbeing. Service learning is key to future success for young people, and these are the reasons why:

1. Builds Empathy and Compassion

Volunteering helps students understand different life experiences and challenges, teaching them to care about others and be more empathetic.

2. Develops Life Skills

Students learn responsibility, teamwork, communication, leadership, and problem-solving—skills that are useful in school and life.

3. Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem

Accomplishing goals and making a difference helps young people feel proud and capable, which builds their self-confidence.

4. Promotes Gratitude

Seeing how others live can help children appreciate what they have and become more generous and grounded.

5. Encourages Civic Responsibility

Service learning helps students understand their role in the community and shows them how they can contribute to making the world a better place.

At Loreto College, our girls are given lots of opportunities to give back to the community through service learning, leadership and co-curricular.

Two Images that caught my eye this week:

The importance of Human Connection. A powerful reminder at Loreto we strive for “no invisible children” and all students are seen and valued.

Half Way Day – Year 12’s Week 6 Term 2

When our daughters grow up and reach developmental milestones there is cause for some celebration.

Our Year 12s will be reaching a milestone of their own which is halfway point of their Year 12 journey. The day signifies that the Class of 2025 only have only 15 weeks left of Year 12  to graduation (but who’s counting!)

In conversations with the girls there are mixed emotions about finishing school. Ideas around career pathway, transition planning, goal setting and completing work have been discussed.

A good article from ReachOut Australia is a useful resource for our young people – see below if your daughter needs help with completing work and goal-setting.

Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People in South Australia recently published a report in January last year 2023: “High Stakes High Schools”

In the report, young people were asked the question “what would make Year 12 better”?

Two responses included access to adults who are more supportive overall and greater focus on student wellbeing over academic achievement and provision of mental health support. For further reading, please see the report below:

At Loreto College, we address these responses with our SEAD curriculum, supportive teaching team, mentors and Leader of Wellbeing and Academic care staff, and College Counsellors Ms Treesa Parrish and Ms Corinne McKee.

WE DO……

I love the “At Loreto College Marryatville We Do Poster” that I put together a few years ago and is in every classroom around the school – see below and attached.

A prayer for the beginning of Pride Month 1-30 June

"Dear God, we thank you for the beauty and diversity of creation, and for the unique gifts you have given to each individual.

We pray for the LGBTQ+ community, that they may find acceptance, love, and joy in their identities.

May they be free from discrimination and prejudice, and may they be surrounded by compassion and understanding.

Guide us to be allies and advocates for justice and equality, and to create a world where everyone can live authentically and with dignity.

Amen."
