Year 5 News

Year 5’s have been really busy this term with lots of exciting things!
Cross Country
On the 15th of May all students who made the cross country team were going to District Athletics. It was held at Tatterson Park. All the top age students were going to run 3km and the younger age groups were going to run 2km. The day was very exciting because we got to compete with different schools and get points for your school. All the kids that were in cross country were either in grade 3,4,5 or 6. On the day of the districts it was kind of cold and windy but luckily it wasn't raining. On the day of practice before cross country we were all told that we had to be at school before 9:00 because that was the time we were leaving. Alina
The excited and nervous day of cross country
As we were leaving the school to walk to Tatterson Park we got our jerseys with our own numbers on the back so everybody can see what number we are when we are racing. I walked out with my friends knowing I randomly had this weird feeling in my stomach. It was an exciting and anxious feeling combined together. When we got to the stadium I hurried to put my jersey on and started stretching. After a while, other people finished their challenging race. I was warming up and until I heard my race get called out to come to the racing field . Leila
Our school isn’t that far away from Tatterson park so we were able to walk the which took a rough 20 minutes to get there. We were the first school to get there since the races started at 10:00 and we got there at 9:20. Our whole cross country team tried really hard to get to that second place and that we also deserve it. The races started from U 12/13 down to U 9/10. It is really hard to get to top ten since in most of the races there are about 80 to 90 students. The school in front of us was Keysborough gardens, who came 1st. For the people who came, the top ten division will be on 29th May on a Friday. Joshua
I love cross country. It's lots of fun to meet our old friends that left the school. So it all started when I got to school late. I didn’t even know that I had cross country I walked into the classroom and every one was telling me to hurry and go outside then it hit me I HAVE CROSS COUNTRY I have never seen myself run that fast in my entire life so I went outside and we started to walk to the place we were running and while we were walking Mrs. Edwards gave me a Jersey and a number my number was 77. CAMP
It was a cold day but exciting because it was FINALLY camp. I was waiting for camp for so long and it's finally here. I packed my suitcase and went to school with my friends. The bus also arrived and we said goodbye to our parents. After maybe 45 minutes we were finally at camp. They showed us our cabins which had bunk beds and it was awesome. My cabin was the biggest cabin. It was so huge that there were 5 bunk beds in the room. Amilia
When I woke up I knew today was going to be a fun day. When we got to school I met up with some of my friends and when we got to the classroom there was a note on the door that said’’ 5CB go to the soccer pitch.’’ So we headed for the soccer pitch. When we got there I saw lots of people with their suitcases and a lot of the parents saying bye to their kids. After a while of waiting the bus arrived. The teachers said to put our suitcases under the bus. After that I got on the bus and the bus driver put on a movie for us to watch. After the long bus ride to camp we finally got there and the place was beautiful. Finally we did some activities, then we had dinner and we went to bed. Theo
Us Year 5s recently had our first camp, from the giant swing to damper cooking here's what we did. My group had the zipline up first. I was scared to go on it but I just had to let go at the top. It was so much fun speeding down. We had a giant swing and it was fun swinging up and down if you do a giant swing go to the top. Next we had dinner. It was pasta and it tasted so good. Owen
I went to Mt Evelyn this year and it took a super long time to get there. When we got there we got to go to our cabins and it was so amazing there. After we put our things away in the cabins, we went outside to play a bit and we played gaga ball. It was so amazing, after that we went to do some activities. One was a giant swing. It was scary and extremely fun. Marlisa
The most exciting camp of my life. When we got to the camp we did our first activity, mine was bush cooking. I was happy because I had a group for camp. That day we also did low ropes it was fantastic and super fun.
We also did a night walk. We didn't see many interesting things but we got marshmallows and got to toast them. My friends were telling scary stories to each other. Malakai
When we went to camp it was so cool. The activities were so scary and cool. Also it was very high too! The food was also really delicious for us to eat! My favourite part about the activity was the giant swing! It was really high, scary and it felt like you were flying! So that was my favourite part about the activities! Madison
I went to Mt. Evelyn camp this year. It took a while to get there but there was a TV on the bus, literally the best bus ever. We watched a movie called “Wreck It Ralph”. We also watched a movie at the campsite called “ Yes Day “ ! We did a lot of activities at camp. My favourites were giant swing and flying fox. They were the most humongous activities out of the whole camp! For the giant swing, You wear a harness and get attached to a rope, then they pull a string down below for you to go high up the sky. Jasmine
The camp was definitely worth the wait, it was good to spend some more time with friends and even learn a thing or two along the way. But going back to our families also felt great. On the last day I think that big walk really tired us out. But it was good to come back to school the next day. I personally missed playing soccer with all my friends, Can't wait for next year. Jonah
I also loved roasting marshmallows, but sadly we could only have one each. We also did trivia on camp, and each group was split in half. The group that won the trivia was called “The teddy bears”, and I was in it! The winners won a mini trophy that said “Mt Evelyn Quiz Winners”. I was really sad when we had to go home on Wednesday. An extra night would have been nice. I was also surprised that the whole camp had gone by so fast! I had an amazing time on my first camp! I give it a 4.8 out of 5! Elpida
Animals of Oz Incursion
I’d say it was one of the most interesting incursions I have ever experienced. We first started off by listening to a worker who was telling us about the incursion and showing us the first Australian Animal to have a look at and even touch! Before she showed us the first animal, she told us what part of Australia it was from! Emily
One of my favourites was the Shingleback. The Shingle back looked like it had 1 head on each side, when I saw it I was wondering which side was the head. I finally figured it out and tried to remember that side was the head. Each time there was a new animal Kara gave us 3 clues about the animal, so we can guess it. One of the most interesting animals was a bettong. I had never heard of it before and found some information about. The Incursion was a memorable time and I learned so much about all the animals. Briella
The exciting day when Animal OZ arrived at our school to show and talk about their animals. The Animals were all in cages. The first animal was a magnificent Shingleback Lizard. Its tail looked like a head and was very scaly. We got to pat this Lizard with 2 fingers. The next Animal was a feathery, cool thorny frogmouth. It was shaped like a Owl and had a yellow mouth like a frog. We got to pat it and it was so smooth and feathery. Lenny
I was jumping with excitement, happy to finally have an incursion about animals. I was really happy. I was really looking forward to the day of the incursion. Finally the special day came to finally meet new animals. There was a lady that came to teach us about animals. Her name was Cara. Cara was really kind and friendly. She was a worker from the zoo and had brought many Australian animals for us to see, feel and learn about. Malita
Wow what an exciting day today we have an incursion about…. ADAPTATIONS! As soon as I saw her coming I was ready to roll, she introduced us to her. Cath, was her name and indeed it was pretty but further than that we were ready to see some animals. The first one we saw was the ringtail possum, her name was Blossom and she also looked like one. She was very soft and cuddly, her tail also curled up into a ring which was very cool. The next animal was the tree frog. They are endangered because their habitats are being destroyed. Olivia
Mass
By Ariel Nguyen
We have been to many masses this year and one of them was the resurrection mass. We went to church and learnt some things about the resurrection. Jesus died and had risen from the dead. The mass was special. There were special readings from other languages, pianists and the people who brought the bread and wine for the communion. The resurrection mass is about how Jesus died for us and now we celebrate that Jesus has risen. It is special for our school as it is named after the resurrection.
Kaboom
By Lucas Di Natale
To celebrate Resurrection day we had an incursion from Kaboom. The whole school was separated into groups. There were 20 groups. We got a number and lined up in our number group and had a party with some good old songs. Then we got to the activities. There were a variety of activities to go on, they were all fun.
Some activities had to use pairs while some did not use any. Such as soccer scoring. You have to do it individually and grab your own ball. There was also a fun activity and you would have to pair up in 2 or 3s. You had to get a ball and a tube and put the ball on the inside of the tube and let it slide making sure to keep it flowing or you lose the game. It was a lot of fun.
Animal Adaptations Incursion
By Edie Flynn & Ella Flood
Karah from Animals OZ came to talk to us about different animals including their adaptations and their habitats. We had many different animals come over to our classroom. One of the animals was a Brush Tail Bettong. Sadly they're very endangered and do not have very good adaptations to help them.
She showed us many different creatures and told us about where they live, what they eat and how they live. Karah showed us Walter, a very friendly python. He can sense his prey and use his fangs to grab them and his body to squeeze them. We also saw Shadow the Tawny Frogmouth, that can camouflage so other animals can’t see him and his mouth looks like a flower and he attracts food that way.
The animals were really cool and we learned a lot about how they have different adaptations that help them survive.
