🚸 Road Safety Around Primary Schools: A Shared Responsibility

With school in full swing, the safety of our students—especially during drop-off and pick-up times—remains a top priority. Roads around primary schools can be very busy, and it’s vital that everyone does their part to create a safe environment for our children.

Walk Safely to School Day

On Tuesday, our school proudly celebrated Walk Safely to School Day, promoting healthy habits, road awareness, and safe pedestrian behaviour. It was wonderful to see so many students and families getting involved—walking together, chatting, and making safety a shared focus. Events like this help reinforce the importance of safe travel and show children how to be active, alert participants in their own journey to school.

Why Road Safety Matters

Primary school children are still developing their road sense. Their smaller size makes them harder for drivers to see, and they may not always judge distances or speeds accurately. That’s why extra caution is needed around schools.

Key Reminders for Parents and Drivers

  • Observe the 40 km/h Speed Limit: School zones are clearly marked and enforce a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h during designated hours. This gives drivers more time to react and helps prevent accidents.
  • Use Designated Drop-off Zones: Avoid double parking or stopping in no-stopping areas. These rules exist to protect children’s visibility and reduce congestion.
  • Stay Alert: Put phones away and avoid distractions. Young children can behave unpredictably near roads.
  • Set a Good Example: Cross at designated crossings, obey traffic signs, and encourage children to do the same.

Safety Tips for Students

  • Stop, Look, Listen, Think: Teach children to look both ways and wait until it’s safe to cross.
  • Always Hold an Adult’s Hand: Children under 10 should always hold the hand of a trusted adult when crossing the road. They may not yet have the skills to judge traffic speed or distance safely on their own.
  • Use Crosswalks and Flags: Encourage them to cross only where it’s safe and visible.
  • Walk, Don’t Run: Running can lead to sudden moves into traffic.
  • Be Bright, Be Seen: Reflective gear or bright clothing helps improve visibility.

Working Together for Safer Streets

Everyone—parents, school staff, local councils, and the broader community—has a role to play in road safety. Let’s show our children that their safety matters by making smart, cautious choices near school zones.
