Adolescent Health Nurse

Health Corner with Rosemary Bunge Adolescent Health Nurse

I’m happy to be able to support Mt Beauty Secondary College, casually for the rest of this year.

The key role of the adolescent health nurse is to support health promotion and primary prevention in secondary schools. Through identifying and building on existing school initiatives and providing appropriate preventative health care, the adolescent health nurse assists the school to better support the health and wellbeing needs of our students.

The role encompasses:

  • health promotion and primary prevention
  • school community development activities
  • small group work focussing on health-related discussion and information.
  • Knowledge of local services for advice and referral to assist young people in making healthy lifestyle choices.

The things I will focus on supporting the College with this term are.

Providing up to date sexual health and development information and support to the whole secondary school community with a particular focus this term on year 7 and 9. This will support students to develop knowledge around their sexual health and development and a range of social and emotional skills to assist them to make positive choices in relation to their sexual health and wellbeing.

Assist the school community with identifying needs and community contacts available to assist, especially in relation to sexual health and mental health and wellbeing.

First aid is not the role of the adolescent health nurse, but they are able to support first aid staff with incidents that occur on the days present if needed.

Quote for the week: “The closest thing to being cared for is to care for someone else.”
