Principal's Report
Tim Bernau | Acting Principal
Dear Skye Families,
Welcome to the first newsletter of the term. I hope everyone found some time to rest and rejuvenate during the September holiday break. As I step into the role of Acting Principal for this term, I look forward to leading and learning alongside this wonderful community. I also extend my acknowledgment to Mrs. Kim Weissenburger, who has been appointed as the school's Acting Assistant Principal. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in the area of Literacy and has led numerous whole school improvement initiatives that have brought positive change to our school.
Less than a week to go now until our Art Show! The weather forecast is shaping up to be perfect next Wednesday and we look forward to welcoming the community to see the wonderful artwork from our Skye Primary School students as well as a number of exciting activities to engage with. Massive thanks to Jac Jackson for the considerable time and energy that is going into making this a fantastic event.
Congratulations to the following students for achieving Silver Award status for demonstrating exemplary behaviour at school:
A big clap for Year 4 students who recently returned from their enriching camp at Phillip Island. Their conduct was commendable, with both camp staff and the Skye teaching team heaping praise on their behaviour, respect, and sense of responsibility. These achievements underline the values of Skye Primary School.
The school's visual environment continues to progress with the second phase of our mural work. Families arriving on foot are now greeted by a burst of colour from the floral mural at the Ballarto Rd entrance near the pedestrian crossing. A poignant sea of red poppies now also envelopes our memorial plinth. This term, both the senior toilets (beginning Monday 16/10) and junior toilets (date TBC) will be upgraded and the old administration building is in the process of having its roof repaired marking the beginning of its redevelopment. Future plans involve exciting new spaces for Team Kids, Japanese and Visual Art classes. Our much loved Kitchen Garden program is set to return for next year and will find its new home in the kitchen space next to the gym. I look forward to keeping you updated with these developments in future newsletters.
Over the coming weeks, our staff will be working on the class placements for 2024. As part of this process, students will have the opportunity to indicate some of their preferred classmates. If you have specific requests regarding placements, please put them in writing and address them directly to me (timothy.bernau@education.vic.gov.au) by the 10th of November. Please review our Skye PS Class Placement Policy prior to submitting any requests.
Next week, we look forward to meeting many of our 2024 Foundation students for their Early Years Interview. This interview helps us gain a snapshot of our future students' current level of development in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and fine and gross motor skills; ensuring that we can tailor our teaching approach to their individual needs. This will be followed in Week 4 with our first 'Step into Prep' session, which will start with Storytime and a craft activity
Warm regards,
Tim Bernau
Acting Principal
