Cycling State Club Championships

Reuben Smith of year 11 recently rode in the Cycling State Club Championships for Brunswick, a sister club to Wangaratta.

He was a member of a 3 rider team which competed in 2 events:

Team Pursuit – normally ridden with 4 team members but in this event there were only 3 which meant that each individual was under more physical pressure to achieve best performances. 3 people ride 16 laps of the velodrome as fast as they can. Each rider takes turns being out front setting a good pace facing max air resistance while the other two sit in behind the slipstream but still keeping up with the front rider. Usually the front rider does one lap before peeling off to the back position but Reuben was asked to do 2 laps each time as was the fittest.

Team Sprint - 3 team members and each individual rides one lap as fast as they can – as the first rider approaches the line for the end of their lap the next rider is ready to go ( bit like a running relay with no baton change!!) The times of all 3 riders are added and the team with the fastest combined time is declared winner.

Reuben's team finished first in both events taking the Gold Medal.

Reuban (picture on the left) continues to train hard as he works towards participating in the individual State Championships in December where he is aiming for selection in the State Cycling Team.

Wangaratta High School and community wish him all the best in his endeavours to gain selection.

Year 11 VCE VM - Personal Development Skills Class Project

Students in the Year 11 Vocational Major, Personal Development Skills class are focusing on making community connections. One organisation they  have chosen to support is the Wang Night Shelter by way of promoting a special fundraising event.

Volunteers passionate about helping others have put together a long list of local musicians to perform on Sunday 22nd October at the Wang Club.

There will also be a jumping castle and face painting for the kids. Money raised will be used to support the day to day running of Zac’s Place, a support place for people in need.
