Weeks 3 & 4: Willy Kids are Accountable

Willy Kids are accountable, and this means that we hold ourselves and each other up to the highest standards for our behaviour and our learning. When we are accountable for our actions, we are confident to make the right choices or to face the consequences when things haven’t turned out to be the best for everyone.

Willy Kids are accountable for their behaviour. We try to be great Willy Kids who make good choices before we act, and we are responsible and trustworthy. From time to time, however, we make mistakes, but it is important that we learn from these mistakes and that we fix them up so they won’t happen again. We need to be prepared to say sorry and then prove we are sorry by not letting it happen again. This is an important part of growing up.

Willy Kids are also accountable for their learning. We work hard to stay on task and to manage our time well. We always try to put our best effort in and we work with our classmates and teachers to get the work done to the best standard we can. When we do this, we take the lead in our own success and we make a plan to reach our goals. We cannot always be the best at things, but we can always try our best, and no-one can ask more of us than that.

When we don’t act with accountability, there will usually be negative consequences and we will need to fix things up. Consequences are natural but the difficult part is trying to work out what the consequences will be before we make our choices.  It is a good idea to take a bit of time to THINK first!  For example, if we play football inside there is a good chance we’ll break something. It’s better for us to play outside or down the park.   

When we do act with accountability, there will be positive consequences, and usually success. One of the many benefits of being accountable is that when things do go well, we can enjoy the success with gusto, knowing that we made it happen with our considered choices or the responsibility we took to getting there. There is great enjoyment in the success we have earned!  

Our time at Willy Primary is the perfect opportunity to practise accountability. It is a time in our lives where we can learn the important habits of being independent, taking responsibility and fixing things up. These are essential skills that will prepare us to be great people in the future!
