Year 7 Knowledge Class Waste Land Response

Ms Douglass’s Knowledge English class viewed a thought-provoking documentary, Waste Land, highlighting recycled materials at Brazil's largest landfill. The catadores from this landfill use their materials to create some fantastic art pieces inspired by Vik Muniz, a famous Brazilian photographer.

Students were then asked to respond to this documentary with a written and visual response. Students had to choose an issue linked to sustainability they felt strongly about and create their own Art Pieces from any recycled materials from home.

All year level students were invited to vote on these artworks and messages. The winning pieces were:

ART PIECE

1st – Constance Karatzias

2nd – Cristian Docanto

3rd- Michala Yalcin

BLURB

1st - Omar Thabet

2nd - Constance Karatzias

3rd - Ava Giannopoulos

Overall, the students did a fabulous job creating various artworks, highlighting worthwhile issues. Some students will present their TED Talk on the same issue next week.

Mulgrave Country Club Scholarship

On Monday 30 October Nazareth student Allison Nguyen attended Mulgrave Country Club with her family to receive the John Milledge Scholarship Award. I had the privilege of attending the ceremony as the staff representative.

On this night, Mulgrave Country Club hosted its 21st annual scholarship presentation. Twelve local schools were each awarded a $2000.00 scholarship, presented by Club President, Jim Saunders. The successful recipients were from Caulfield Grammar, Rowville Secondary College, Brentwood Secondary College, Wellington Secondary College, Mazenod College, Wheelers Hill Secondary College, Carwatha College, Wesley College, Avila College, Nazareth College, Glenallen School and Emerson School.

The scholarship was awarded to a worthy Year 11 student entering Year 12 studies. The criteria for the chosen recipient were not purely based on academic or sporting ability, but also personal sacrifice, citizenship and potential leadership.

We congratulate Alison on her Award. Alison was nominated by her teachers for this scholarship and has worked hard through the course of 2023.

Nazareth College also extends its gratitude to Mulgrave Country Club and President Jim Saunders for their continued support of our community.

Unit 2 Visual Communication Design

To conclude their studies in VCE Unit 2 for Visual Communication Design, students were challenged to complete a design process to identify a solution for a Brief that they wrote. They had a fictional client, Studio Lumos, and a Communication Need that they needed to create a response for. The Need was:

'To design a hanging light pendant for the interior of a house.'

Each student created a folio full of unique ideas that applied different creative, critical and reflective thinking techniques. This included using research, SCAMPER and interviewing peers for feedback to inspire them in the latter stages of the design process as well as writing annotations. Please take a look at some of the detailed folio pages and the exciting finals that the students produced.
