Year 6 Camp – Progressive Recount – Phillip Island Adventure Resort

Daniel S

I was away from home for 2 nights and Year 6 Camp was going to be a blast! I had my backpack, my main bag and my pillow. I said goodbye to my dog, the house, then got in the car and headed off to school. As I arrived at the front of the school, I dropped my bag off at the edge of the fence so the teachers could put them in the bottom of the bus. I hugged Mum and Dad, said goodbye and sat down in classes to mark the role. After we marked the role we got on the bus and off we went! We had a bus ride just under an hour and a half to stop off at San Remo to have lunch, stretch, before getting on the bus and heading off to the Phillip Island Adventure Camp. After 3 long hour we finally arrived at our camp. As we unpacked the bus we got greeted by Greg and Will and they told us what we were going to do during the camp.

The activity that I wanted to go on the most was the twin flying fox. The word (twin) means two people at once.

But way before doing the flying fox it was raft making and I can tell you our raft fell apart after the last person sat down. So, I grabbed one pipe and one oar and paddled around collecting all the things with our group.

After we did a couple of activities we had some food. And it was the best camp food I have ever had! We had Pasta Bolognaise with lime cordial drink and it was so good I couldn’t believe that is was camp food - normally camp food looks like it is 15 years old!

After a couple meals and activities, we all stepped foot in the GA-GA-BALL Pit which was very fun even the teachers played. Once everyone was clear on the roles we started. It was very crowded at the start but after Mr. Farmer and Greg knocked out 10 people it was left to a couple people and some teachers. Mr. Farmer got me out so then I was just watching. The final two people were Greg and Mr. Farmer and the winner was eventually Mr. Farmer.

We did many awesome activities on camp but my overall favourite was the giant swing and I’m pretty sure most people would agree with me. We all lined up for the giant swing and the first few people went on… a lot of people went to the very top and I thought I would too but when I saw how scared they were I wasn’t so sure. Most people had already gone and Riley who was in front of me went on while I got my harness on. She went a bit over halfway and that was about how high I wanted to go. Riley had finished her turn and I got clipped onto the swing and pulled up, I was really nervous. “Stop!” I yelled because that’s how high I wanted to go, except no one heard so they kept going! It was a bit high, maybe a metre or so to the top. I was still really nervous. “Go!” yelled the instructor and I pulled the rope. It felt like I was free falling! I held on for dear life but it was so much fun and honestly less scary than I thought it would be. I still regret not going to the top.

On the second day of camp, our second activity was raft making. I was soaking wet from canoeing, since Ada and I had accidentally rafted ourselves into the water fountain and when we finally managed to get out it started to drizzle with rain. I was also freezing cold because I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts and it was about 10 degrees which helped a lot. Anyways, when we started our raft making activity we had to split our group into 2 teams so we could compete with each other. On my team I had Lily, Ada, Liam H, Finn H, Brandon and Jasper. We grabbed our raft making items which were 5 plastic pipes, 4 ropes and 3 wooden planks. Ada had this good idea of how to tie the plastic white pipes together with the ropes. We all worked as a team to create our raft. We wanted ours to be the best raft anyone had ever made so we had to get busy.

Once we had finished making our raft we realised the other team was doing our exact idea and had copied us step by step, only theirs looked way better. We just had to ignore it and push our raft into the water, but the thing was it was way too heavy and we even needed the teacher’s help. We heaved and pushed and finally it was in the water. Liam H got on first and then after him Ada got on, and then after her Lily got herself on, and then soon everyone had made themselves onto our raft. Except we were missing someone. Finn. He didn’t even try to go on, instead he hopped into the water, grabbed one of the poles of our raft and started to swim away. Suddenly, our raft started to tip to one side and before I knew it I was gripping onto Lily’s shoe. “AAAHHH!!!” we all squealed. We did not want to fall into the murky water. We soon realised Finn was trying to tip us in. “STOP!!” Lily and I screamed at once. My shoes were now teetering on the water’s edge. I gripped onto Lily’s shoe even harder because suddenly our raft was starting to break, “What are you doing, Ede?” asked Lily, but I didn’t respond. I looked around and realised that the other team (who stole our idea) were perfectly fine and rafting along the water. Liam suddenly jumped into the water and started to chase their raft. “Liam, you can’t chase their raft.” Mrs Holmes said at once. All of a sudden, we all fell to the water and I screamed because my finger touched something slimy and it MOVED! I had never seen myself run out of water faster than ever before. Now I was saturated in water. “Looks like their team won.” I couldn’t believe it. I grabbed my towel and patted myself down. I was colder than ever before. Then, I started to burst into laughter. “I’m going for a shower!” I said as I ran up the hill. That was probably my favourite highlight of camp.

Deep breaths, in… out…. I was about to go on the giant swing and I was petrified! I was the 6th person to go on the giant swing, Issy was the 5th, Pip the 7th and amber was near the back. Greg was hooking me up to the cables and I was pretty much hyperventilating whilst asking whether anyone had ever died on the giant swing. The answer was, of course, no.

“Are you ready?” asked Greg,

“I think so,” I said in a VERY shaky voice.

He called for the hall team just like he had for all the other people before me. All the instructions that Greg had been explaining before anyone went on the swing were racing through my mind as everyone pulled me up. I was panicking that the rope wouldn’t pull or the cables would break mid-air! I was TERRIFIED.  Everyone was cheering from the bottom and my hands were really sweaty from holding the rope so tight. Finally, I got to the top. I didn’t dare look down. All I could see were the white of the clouds.

“3… 2… 1… swing!” yelled Greg. Without even thinking, I yanked the green rope that releases you and makes you swing. Then, nothing. All I could see was the white of the clouds. I honestly thought I was going to die. I felt like I was free falling and nothing was going to stop me hitting the floor. As I swung down I spun around in my harness. I saw myself plummeting towards the concrete. My life flashed before my eyes. I couldn’t help but scream as I came closer and closer and closer to the ground. As I thought I was about to fall to my death the harness pulled me back up and I was up in the air again. I was still screaming as I came back down for the second swing to start. It was like nothing else I had ever felt before. It felt like my whole body was still in the air looking over the lake whilst my soul was flying back down the other way.

Slowly I started to come to a stop and Greg unhooked me. I was shaking and holding my heart. I stepped down the ladder. My legs felt like jelly and I struggled to get my harness off. Pip came and hugged me in her harness ready to have her go and I sat down and looked at the video that Pip took of me on the swing.

I had so much fun on the giant swing! That was just one of the awesome things that we did on camp, but it was certainly the scariest! I wish I could go back and do it all again!

Scienceworks Excursion

This week we had a great day at Scienceworks! We watched a movie on the ceiling in the Planetarium that explored the concept of potential life on other planets. In the Electricity and Magnets room we had the opportunity to consolidate our learning from STEM lessons with Mrs Jones. It was so much fun having some free time challenging our strength, speed and flexibility in Sportsworks. In the Think Ahead exhibition we explored our creativity and knowledge with new technology and innovations.
