S.P.O.R.T. Report from Touch Football

#UNREAL

We arrived on the day with the youngest, ages ranging from 14-16 (however only 2 were 16 years of age), and a diverse range of experience in Touch Football. For some players this felt a little daunting as they saw the 16 and 17yr olds representing the other teams. We made a clear goal before our first game, and that was to be supportive of each other and keep our communication positive.

Our first game was a game which required a large amount of persistence and determination. Maitland High School raced away to an early start and with the games only 20 minutes long we were behind on the scoreboard 4-2 with only 4 minutes to go. Ben Couperthwaite demonstrated leadership qualities and said "hey boys let's go!", and went out onto the lush green grassed field to organise some fast play the balls and finished it off with a diving try in the centre of the field. This sprung the youthful KKHS boys into life and managed to force a draw in the first game of the day.

Between the first and second game the players got together and continued to teach each other different set plays and tactics. It was a nice moment of the day to see this occur. However, I heard the comment "we will only do this if we are behind". I had to interrupt, because I could see the joy in the players faces as they were practising the moves, "Stop! We are not waiting until we are behind. We are going to go onto that field and play as though we love this game and do all these moves. Just be aware, mistakes will happen and we are going to be willing to put the extra effort in to defend our errors".

Our time to play our second match came and the players went onto that field and did exactly what they enjoy doing. They played controlled yet exciting Touch Football and new when to increase the tempo of the game when required. Mason, Callum, Lewis and Ryder provided a great deal of razzle dazzle to start the match, with, I believe 5 switches in the one play before going wide and attacking a sideline.  Jett, Ben, Hudson and Reese would also present their own flair and before we knew it our wingers, (Tyrone, Deakan and Daniel) were reaping the rewards scoring multiple tries. Daniel managing a hat trick, two of these coming from beautiful harbour bridge style passes from Reese. Final score 6-1.

Our final match went back and forth and again the KKHS boys played with intensity and excitement. With Jett scoring multiple tries and Lewis, Callum, Reese and Mason making vital try saving plays in this match and the final score finishing at 6-4. KKHS victors.

Due to our for and against record and suffering no losses, KKHS was named Coalfields Zone winners. We arrived that morning unsure and with  a simple and clear goal before our first game, and that was to be supportive of each other and keep our communication positive. KKHS Open Boys Touch Football team did more than this. I can honestly say I went home that afternoon extremely proud and inspired by their actions.

2023 has seen the implementation of our S.P.O.R.T program at KKHS. During extra curricular periods on a Thursday afternoon, 105 students have been training in their squads to improve their skills and game play. During the year, external providers have worked with some of our squads. We thank the following for their expertise and the time and effort they put into providing our students with quality programs.

  • Advance Football Academy: Soccer program
  • Fit4Kids: Strength and Conditioning Program for our Female Netball and Basketball squads.
  • NRL: LIFT program with our Rugby League squads.

Term 4 has seen our Opens Boys Touch Football and Open Boys Basketball compete in the Coalfields Gala Day with both teams coming home as winners. We look forward to both teams competing at the Regional level in 2024.

We also had all age groups compete in the Rugby League 9’s comp during Term 4, as well as our Girl’s team. We thank Mr Yulianto for the massive effort in getting our squads organised and taking teams to these events.

Trials for our 2024 squads will be held early in Term 1 next year, students and parents are encouraged to keep on eye on the schools social media pages and daily notices for trial announcements.

Massive thanks to our Sponsors for their support of this program.
