R U OK? Day

At lunchtime today, our school was blessed by our Wellbeing Team who had organised a wonderful event to create awareness around mental health and to remind staff and students that help is available. Students enjoyed live music, a free sausage sizzle and lots of activities - and it was great to have Headspace join us for the event.

A big thank you to the staff and students that made this a successful event, and especially to Miss Connors.

Rite Journey News

Bush School at Trevallyn

On September 6th, 35 Rite Journey students, along with some dedicated volunteers, tackled the great outdoors at Trevallyn Recreation Area. With hot drinks by the open fire, we geared up for a morning of mountain biking.

Pedalling through challenging terrain, our students displayed resilience and teamwork, conquering obstacles, and sloshing through cascades of mud. The year 9 students returned to class after recess, invigorated and bonded by their adventurous experience.

It was a time of laughter, challenge, and cherished memories, demonstrating the adventurous spirit of our Rite Journey program. Thanks to our students, parent volunteers, and educators for making it happen. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on our Rite Journey program!

In Term 3, TRJ girls have been learning about Worldviews. These shape what we think and do, but also the way we see the world around us. Ibu Reyes and Mrs. L have helped us identify our worldviews and better understand our thought processes and actions. We are reminded that as Christians, we are called to change the world for the better and be like Jesus when we think, speak and act. We have been reflecting on how the world around us glorifies being busy, and sometimes it feels like we must be doing something all the time and be thriving in everything we attempt. That puts a lot of pressure on us and can create significant stress in our lives. God never asked us to be like that. In fact, when we are too busy, it is difficult to see what is happening around us and we tend to ignore the needs of our spirit and soul. We forget to pray, read our Bibles, sleep well, and spend quality time with family and friends. In TRJ we have dedicated time to look after ourselves and connect with each other more. For example, the Bliss picnic, juggling, self-care, solitude, gratitude and the trust sticks, these activities have all helped us to focus on our Christian worldview by staying connected as a class and look out for each other more. These resources have helped us to learn and grow our relationships. Finally, we have been encouraged to think and act differently than the world does, based on the reality of God’s Kingdom.

Students enjoyed a whole school casual clothes day and were encouraged to wear purple.

Rock Challenge

Featuring rock bands, funk bands, jazz bands, acoustic solos and duos, the LCS Rock Challenge Concert was held at LCS last Thursday evening. The atmosphere in the packed PAC was electric, as students wowed the audience with their covers and original performances. The following day, students performed at the northern heat for the Tasmanian Rock Challenge.

We are excited to share that 'Melodic Times' were chosen to perform in the state final. Year 10 students, Lucy, Serena and Frankie, are thrilled to represent LCS at this event on Friday, and we wish them all the best!

Alumni Basketball Team Win Grand Final

Ruth Sands - International Scouts Trip

Anyonghaseo!

My name is Ruth, and I’m a Patrol Leader for Trevallyn Sea Scouts. Last month, I went to South Korea for the World Scout Jamboree, a scout camp that only happens every four years and I was lucky enough to go on.

A Jamboree invites about 43,000 Scouts from all over the globe to come and meet in a central place like SaeManGeum, where they can chat, trade, and do activities, interacting in an event you can’t compare to anything else.

To start with, when we arrived in Seoul, we met the tail end of a flood, and our arrival to the campsite was delayed. During the camp, we encountered a heatwave that managed to strike down quite a number of Scouts. And we had to leave the campsite a number of days early, due to Typhoon Khanun. I had a great time.

When in Seoul, we stayed in a great hotel and got to go touristing. We went to Hondage Markets, N Seoul Tower, and Coex Aquarium, and already were meeting many other international Scouts. In particular, we met a number of Indonesians, not just then but through the whole trip, and they were very excited when I tried to hold a conversation in Bahasa.

At the Opening Ceremony, we were greeted by Bear Grylls, the Chief Scout Commisioner, who opened the Jamboree, and was followed by a k-pop concert. We camped in tents, like scouts are wont to do, and I’ve got to say that facilities and food were pretty good.

One night, my patrol went to a Japanese campsite and we had an arm wrestle showdown. (Our patrol won).

We also invited some Swedes to our tents, and they taught us a Swedish horse dance, and we taught them the Nutbush. Just walking around, I got to meet Mexicans, Americans, Brits, Peruvians, People form Belize, Italians, French, Belgians, Swiss and so many more. Everyone had amazing things to share, whether it be food, badges, scarves, or stories. We shared around Vegemite and drop bear horror stories.

Because of the heatwave particularly, a lot of the official activities were cancelled, but we still got to do things like jumping off roofs, waterslides and water fights, and crate stacking.

We ate lots of different foods, and let me tell you, Korean BBQ is life changing. By the time I got home, I may have been worn out beyond belief, but it was worth it for all the stories and memories and experiences I could have gotten nowhere else.

And really, that’s what Scouts is all about. Gaining useful skills, yes, but also just experiencing life and adventures you will have forever.

Singfest 2023

Our Junior School Vocal Ensemble were privileged to perform alongside 7 school choirs, and 270 fellow students, at Singfest on Wednesday evening. Junior School student, Roman, did a fabulous job as co-MC for the evening.

This moving event enhances and celebrates collaboration of choirs in a non-competitive format.

Prior to the event, the JSVE spent the day at the Launceston Conference Centre, where they were led by the wonderful Singfest committee.

Year 5 - Poetry of the Psalms

In 5G we have been exploring poetry this term. As part of our unit we looked at poetry in the Bible. Did you know that around 30% of the Bible is written in poetic form? We looked especially at the Psalms and how the authors wrote Psalms for many reasons, some are Psalms of praise, some are Psalms of lament. A common poetic technique used in the Psalms is a couplet, many of us tried to incorporate this into our own Psalms.

Here are a few of our Psalms:

Outdoor Education & Outdoor Leadership

NSATIS Term 3 Report

Photos by Senior School student, Bradley Moylan

Well done to our NSATIS Girls 1sts Soccer and Netball teams who played in their Grand Finals this week!

On Monday 11th September our NSATIS 1sts Netball team headed up to St. Pats to take on the all-conquering SPC team who have won the NSATIS 1sts title for the last 7 consecutive years as well as the NSATIS 2nds title for the last 10 consecutive years, a real sign of the depth that SPC have in their netball ranks. Our girls did an amazing job and played so well, going down by 14 points 44-30. One of the closer NSATIS Netball Grand Finals in recent years. Just getting into the Grand Final (with a thrilling win over Grammar) was an awesome achievement but to compete so well with a SPC was a real credit to the team. It was also awesome to have a bigger crowd than the home team, so a huge thank you to all who came along to support the girls. Thanks also to Miss Susan Davies who coached the girls this season.

On Wednesday 13th September our soccer team headed to Faulkner Park to take on the undefeated Grammar team in the NSATIS Grand Final, a team that has secured the NSATIS title for the last 4 years! The girls (and crowd) braved absolutely freezing conditions and fought hard against a strong Grammar side, eventually going down 4-0 which was an improved result compared to when we played them during the season. Again, like the netball, it was awesome to see the LCS community in action, with a much bigger contingent of supporters than the home team. Thanks to all who came along to show your support and to Mr. Armstrong who coached the girls this season.

The season has also wound up for our NSATIS Boys 1sts soccer team who had a solid season, competing really well in the first division with a young side. Thanks to Mr. Macqueen who coached the boys this season.

2023 also saw the inaugural NSATIS 1sts Volleyball competition and our boys team had an excellent season. Unfortunately stumbling at the final hurdle and only just missing out on a Grand Final berth. Thanks to Mr. Morgan and Mr. Hill who co-coached this team this year.

And that’s a wrap for Term 3 in NSATIS sport, another great season and opportunity for our students to represent LCS in sport!

Itinerant Music Teachers 2023

LCS has a number of instrument teachers who take students for individual lessons at school during school hours. This is an excellent way to learn an instrument and can help students make much faster progress on their instrument. It is recommended that student’s seriously contemplating studying music from grades 9 onwards definitely consider having some private instrument tuition to further their overall music advancement. Any student in grades 5 – 8 who are serious about starting an instrument should also have lessons in order to learn crucial proper technique early in their playing life.

Students continuing lessons from last year will be individually contacted by their teachers to organise lessons for the year.

If you would like your child to start having lessons this year, please email Mr Stewart (stewartp@lcs.tas.edu.au) and include the following details.

  1. Students name:
  2. Class:
  3. Instrument to have lessons on:
  4. Contact phone number:
  5. Your contact details (phone and email)

This will be passed on to a relevant teacher who will contact you for further details.

We currently have teachers available for the following instruments:

  • Piano/keyboard
  • Clarinet/saxophone and Flute
  • Guitar
  • Bass
  • Brass (trumpet etc)
  • Voice
  • Drums

Student Bus Travel Expectations

Student Office Passes Information

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not in correct uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.
