Book Week 2023.

On Wednesday last week the whole school participated in a dress up day for book week. The book week theme was, 'Read Grow Inspire.' There was a range of book-inspired spectacular outfits that filled the whole school with fun and colour. It was an amazing day full of story-telling and characters. We hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed wearing a cool costume for the day. We loved everyone's kooky outfits and we hope you all loved it too!

Year 1 & 2 Excursion to the Melbourne Museum.

This Wednesday the 30th of August our Year 1 and 2 children went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum. As the children have been studying History this term, they explored the museum through a historical lens and considered how things change over time. The museum tour began with the 'Toys Over Time' exhibit.  This exhibit consisted of an array of different toys from different times in history - some were very old, like the First Nations toys on display, and others were very new, such as the showcased video games. After their toy tour, the children visited other parts of the museum, such as the Dinosaur exhibit, complete with fossils, models and sound effects. Some other popular exhibits were the Bug's Alive exhibit, Forest Gallery and the Melbourne Experience.

"Dinosaurs were my favourite part because I liked the bones." - Cooper

"The bug part was my favourite part because I liked how there were spiders there." - Casey

"The glowing rocks were my favourite part because I had never seen those types of rocks before." - Larissa

"The fossils were my favourite because I love them. I love the bones." - Levi

Illustrator Ben Wood Visits Holy Cross.

Today the children were lucky enough to have famous Melbourne illustrator, Ben Wood pay us a visit. Ben began the session by talking about his drawing process and showcased some of his well known work such as the 'Real Pigeons" series. Following this, Ben took the children through an instructional drawing session where the children were invited to design their own pigeon characters with a few tips from Ben. To finish the session Ben invited some of our Holy Cross teachers up the front for a quick pigeon 'draw-off.' Thank you for your inspiring visit, Ben!

📚 Thank You for Embarking on the MS Readathon Journey! 📚A heartfelt applause to all the incredible students who took part in the MS Readathon this August – your dedication to reading and making a difference is truly inspiring! Through the pages you've turned and the stories you've explored, you've not only enriched your own imaginations but also extended your hands to support those affected by multiple sclerosis.

Thank you for working together to raise an amazing $1797.53!!

A very special thank you to the McMahon family - Tilly and Lucy, who raised $1389.53!

Keep the love for books alive, keep learning, and keep believing in the magic of making a difference. Until we read again!

National Child Protection Week (4-10 September)

Every Child in Every Community Needs a Fair Go

Next week is National Child Protection Week, during this week we will revisit our child friendly, Child Safe Standards in our classrooms.

Child Safety Standards were updated by the Commission for Children and Young People in July 2022. Working with the Student Representative Council (SRC) to gain student voice, we put the essence of the standards into child-friendly language. The slideshow put together by the SRC, is on the student's homepage on their chrome books and on our website. We invite you to also go through the standards as a family. It is important that our children know that the adults in our community work together to keep them safe.

National Child Protection Week is all about the ways that we can all work together to build communities that support children and families.

Children are safest when they are listened to, respected and believed.

All adults can play a part by ‘tuning in’ to children in everyday situations about small worries; then they are much more likely to feel comfortable telling us if something big is wrong.

Talking with children about safety:

  • Support children to identify trusted adults (both within the family and outside) they can talk to, if they are worried, upset, or don’t feel safe. Make sure these adults know they are on your child’s list.
  • Remind children that they can talk to you or a trusted adult about anything, no matter how big or small their worry might be.
  • Talk to children about how they know when they feel safe or unsafe. Help them to listen to their early warning signs (how their body feels), and to trust their feelings and instincts.
  • Use everyday activities as opportunities for conversations (e.g. preparing meals and snacks, going for walks, playing, shopping). If children are used to having lots of communication, it can make it easier to talk when big or tricky issues come up.
  • Be open to talking about all kinds of feelings, including anger, joy, frustration, fear and anxiety. This helps children to develop a ‘feelings vocabulary’.

National Child Protection Week is a great time to start conversations with children and families about feeling safe.
