Year Six Slam Poetry

Over the past few weeks, the Year 6 Team has been utilising mentor texts like, "Took the Children Away," among others, to craft a diverse range of poems related to subjects that intrigue the children personally. The children were invited to select any poetic structures that resonated with them, integrating various techniques such as repeating phrases to create a profound impression on the reader.

Cara's poem about Climate Change

Now listen up

All of you

The world is dying

And it's all your fault.

We put things in the water

The Earth's like a slaughter

The world's gone extinct

Like a hose with a kink.

Waves up the shore

We're heating up the core

How will it stop?

Or will we all go 'pop'?

We are in a crisis

And people are dying

It's your fault

And now we young people

Have to pay the price.

And I'm trying to be nice

But now I'm washed away

And I've got nothing to say.

Drop the mic

Go home, goodbye

And leave climate change behind

So we can help regrow the Earth.

Because we can be better

We can be more than greedy rats

Because this - all of it

It has to stop.

Mishayla's poem about Animal Extinction.

Stop, cut, smash animal extinction

Everyone has that one animal that is your favourite

Soon they will all be gone, gone.

Animals are trying to thrive

Animal's home's are getting destroyed

Nearly going to die as they try to survive

This terrible time of going extinct.

Have you ever wondered

What an animal would feel

If they became extinct,

If they lost a family member

Or if this is their last life?

Animals might be happy

Or look happy

But they're not.

They lose the same things, like us.

Year 3 Authors Inspired by the Book 'Waves.'

The picture book 'Waves,' is a narrative about the experiences of refugees on their journey to a new home. Our Year 3 children have been reading the text as part of their Inquiry unit making links to Australian History and Geography. The children also used the mentor text as inspiration when writing their own narratives. They were particulalrly interested in the author's writing techniques and impactful language choices. Below is a narrative written by one of our Year 3 authors.

Leaving Home

By Jesse Utting

As he walked down the street, heart racing fast and ears ringing nonstop. Each footstep is louder and shakier every time. His house was as quiet as space. He spotted his car and started running. He hopped in the car drenched in rain and started driving to the dock. He sees his boat and parks his car thinking about his family that he's gonna leave behind and they don’t even know.

He hops on the boat and starts the engine. He floats into the storm slowly drifting away into nothingness. Suddenly a storm erupted and was knocking his boat left and right!

The boat was quiet but the rain and the waves changed that. It's like 20 supercars revving at once they were all frightened, especially him. He thought he would die of frostbite if the boat didn't sink. He had almost nothing in his suitcase and his t-shirt was ripped to shreds and his pants were as tight as could be, they were gonna rip at any time. His head is aching and he feels as if he's lost control of his body. He was sitting in a puddle drenched, scared and cold as the arctic. CRASH! He hits his head against the wall and everything goes black.

He wakes up to a calm ocean relieved but he starts to look around the boat but there's no one else there. He's confused about what happened. Yet again he's in a state of panic. He feels like his body is frozen in place. A deathly breeze goes past him. Then he realises he is all alone yet again…

He tried looking for anything that could help him get to land. BOOM! He hears thunder and sees lightning in the distance. He starts shaking with fear his legs are shaking, ‘’ Am I ever gonna get out of here?’’ he asked with a crackly voice. Suddenly he sees a flare gun in the captain's deck. A little bit of hope lit up in side of him. He ran over and opened the door and grabbed it.  But it was horrible timing. The everlasting rain was gonna start for 1 week. When he heard the rain, his emotion changed to tears, all you could hear in the captain's deck was drip drop. From his tears he couldn't take it anymore. Then he sees a little line in the distance, ‘’I’m here,’’ he said with a little smile…
