Over the last two weeks the children have been exploring multiplication. We have worked on many whys to describe multiplication and ways in which we are able to find the product of a multiplication equation.

We have focused on creating groups, making arrays, skip counting, and exploring partial arrays. The children have found many useful ways in which to solve multiplication equations such as doubling for groups of 2, double and add 1 more group of groups of 3 and turning around multiplication equations to make it easier to solve.

Science Afternoon

What a fantastic time the children had on Friday afternoon where they were able to explore the concepts of refraction and resistance.

In our refraction experiment the children explored how images changed when looked at through a glass of water. During the experiment, the light traveled from the image through the air, then through the glass cup into the water, and finally out of the glass cup and into the air once more before it reached our eyes. The light bends once when it travels through the glass cup into the water, and then it bends again when it travels out of the glass cup and into the air. As a result, the light paths cross and the image appears to be flipped horizontally.

In our resistance experiment the children explored how wax and crayon resists water. The children wrote secret messages to each other using a candle or a white crayon and then swapped paper. Once they swapped the children then using water coloured paint to expose the secret message. They found the wax from the crayon and candle resisted the water colour paint and instantly showed their secret message.
