As part of our inquiry unit of 'Light and Sound' the children have been exploring ways in which we are able to make sounds with items other than instruments. The children have made their own maracas and pan flutes using craft supplies. Last week the children had the opportunity to then design their own musical instrument. Here are some of their wonderful creations.

After making their musical instrument the children wrote a procedure of how they made their musical instrument. The children focused on using time connective words such as first, next, then, after and verbs such as cut, twist, glue fold; to describe their steps.

The children will use these instruments later in the term as part of their light and sound puppet show they will create.

Science Afternoon

What a fantastic time the children had on Friday afternoon where they were able to explore the concepts of refraction and resistance.

In our refraction experiment the children explored how images changed when looked at through a glass of water. During the experiment, the light travelled from the image through the air, then through the glass cup into the water, and finally out of the glass cup and into the air once more before it reached our eyes. The light bends once when it travels through the glass cup into the water, and then it bends again when it travels out of the glass cup and into the air. As a result, the light paths cross and the image appears to be flipped horizontally.

In our resistance experiment the children explored how wax and crayon resists water. The children wrote secret messages to each other using a candle or a white crayon and then swapped paper. Once they swapped the children then using water coloured paint to expose the secret message. They found the wax from the crayon and candle resisted the water colour paint and instantly showed their secret message.
