2023 Monash Athletics

On Friday the 1st of September our Brentwood Athletics Team competed at the Monash Division Athletics event held at the Knox Athletics Track. Despite the cold and wet morning, the team competed in fantastic spirits and represented the College brilliantly against our local rivals Wheelers Hill, Wellington, South Oakleigh and John Monash.

After a close day of competition our team reigned supreme across the board. This included:

  • Overall shield: 1st
  • Junior shield: 1st
  • Intermediate shield: 1st
  • Senior shield: 1st

That is now two years running that our amazing team has swept the competition and held all four shields simultaneously. An absolutely amazing effort and a reflection of our students talent, hard work and willingness to compete. A huge congratulations also to William Zheng who won the age group title for the 16 years boys.

Students that won their events will now compete at the Eastern Metropolitan Region event on the 9th of October. I'm sure the whole Brentwood community joins me in wishing them the very best of luck in trying to qualify for the State Championships.

Thank you also to those staff who attended the day to support our students and run the events: Kim Nash, Meg Wrench, Sarah Swilks, Kieran Shah, Steven Ancevski, Sofia Zaijka and Lannhi Nguyen.

Junior Boys Hockey

The division matches were held at Hawthorn Hockey club on Friday the 9th of September. After a rough loss in the first game, the boys made improvements and tightened their defense, not conceding any more goals. Unfortunately, the boys did not score, which the conditions did not help as it was cold, windy and raining the whole day. Luckily no one had their teeth knocked out as the boys had taken initiative to pick up mouth guards for themselves.

Game 1 v. Wellington

Wellington 2 to Brentwood 0

Game 2 v. Wheelers Hill

Game 3 v. South Oakleigh

Well done to the whole team: Tyrese Balatico, Kiarain Prum (Our Wonderful Keeper), Stevan Kajisarevic, Lucas Hillier, Nait Mathews, Nathan Te, Patrick Chalmers, Ayden Ling, Daniel Lu, Jacob Smith, James Cox, Jonathan Xu, Khoa Nguyen, Lachie Smith, Leon Chudyk and Zane Spreadborough. Well done to the whole team who in a short time span learnt the basics of hockey to perform very well at a sport they didn’t know. Showing good values of Resilience and Ambition.

Big thanks to Mr McCann for coaching, dedicating lunchtimes to coaching the boys in a sport they have never played. Also, a big thanks to Ms Bach for coming down with the boys to help, supporting the team throughout the harsh weather.

Thank you! Shay and Saurabh

Year 7 Boys Table Tennis

Two teams competed at the Dandenong Table Tennis Stadium on Friday 8th September, coached by Year 9 students Amanda Kong and Lisa Lau. The sportsmanship demonstrated by the players was fantastic, they put their heart and soul into each game and represented Brentwood as amazing role models. The A team came first, winning all our matches 6-0 v Wheelers Hill SC, Oakleigh South SC and Wellington SC. The B team also remained undefeated, winning two matches 6-0 and one match 5-1. Congratulations to both teams for a great day out and a huge thank you to our student coaches for running and organising our coaching sessions, especially after over 30 students trialed for the team.

A team: Lucas Jiang, Jeffery Ma, Nathaniel Philip and Lucas Ramli.

B Team: Gaurav Charanjit Singh, Muadh Ahamed Zayaan, Andy Bao, Aiden Edirisuriya and Roger Duong.

A special mention to Sudhit Kancherkuntla who made the team, however, was unable to play on the day.

Year 7 Girls Table Tennis

Last week, our year 7 girls competed at the Monash Division round robin sports day. After numerous training sessions, coached by Angie Nikolova and Kristina Dew, the two teams were prepared to compete at the Dandenong Table Tennis Centre. As the only school, within the Monash Division, to have year 7 girls competing, the girls had to play against the experienced year 8 teams.

Our year 7 A team played Brentwood’s year 8 girls A team and went down 0-6. The second match, against Wellington year 8 A team, was a real confidence boost as we won 6-0. In the final match of the round, a real nailbiter against South Oakleigh year 8 A team, our girls drew in sets 3-3, but won on games 8-7.

The grand final was a rematch between Brentwood’s year 8 A team and Brentwood’s year 7 A team. Throughout the tournament, our year 7 girls grew in confidence and resilience. The year 7 girls drew in sets 3-3, drew in games 7-7, and lost only in points. A magnificent effort!

Our year 7 B team played and defeated Wellington’s year 8 B team 6-0, and they also defeated Brentwood’s year 8 B team 6-0. Our year 7 B girls were fierce, their knowledge of the game and team tactics was strong. Again, the grand final was a rematch between Brentwood’s year 8 B team and Brentwood’s year 7 B team, with our year 7 B team dominating and winning 6-0. Well done!

Thank you to our student coaches Angie and Kristina for upskilling and training our wonderful year 7 table tennis teams. We are now off to EMR early in term 4. Congratulations girls!
