Eclipse House News

Winter is in the rear-view mirror and Albany is beginning to shine with magical days. Eclipse house continues to be a hive of activity. Winter sport is ending, with many boys excited to be playing finals. We have also had many engaged in recreation over the weekends, Outdoor Education camps, trips to Perth to watch the football and plenty of hard work on academics.

Eclipse house has been busy building positive connections with the boarding and wider community. We have enjoyed spending valuable time with boarders from anchorage and getting together as a village for our annual quiz night and nightly dinners. Hamish Medway and Daniel Fisher did a fantastic job hosting the evening bringing with them a great deal of humour, laughter, and engagement.

We also had a small group of six Tear Twelve's join Mr Forward and myself on our first Bibbulmun Track experience. We camped overnight at West Cape Howe hut and begun working on our section of the track. With the track also celebrating its 25th anniversary we spent the morning maintaining the area. There was plenty of excitement and hard work on display. It was great to see the boarders willingly engage in the volunteering and is the beginning of a special tradition for Eclipse.

Term Three is an exciting and nervous time for Year Twelves and their families. It is the culmination for some of five or six years in boarding and their academic endeavours. I wish all boys the very best for their upcoming exams in Week Ten and Term Four. Below is a quote I leave you from Carol Dweck author of Growth Mindset. I also want to let you know that we are your allies in this period of time and all supervisors look forward to supporting you and celebrating who you are.

“Important achievements require a clear focus, all-out effort, and a bottomless trunk full of strategies. Plus, allies in learning.” - Carol Dweck.

Leaders Reflection

Recreation

Last weekend we woke up to a bright summer’s day (in winter). A small group of boys including myself jumped on a bus and headed out to Nanarup for a surf. Some jumped in despite the cold other had wetsuits to ensure maximum performance. The waves were mostly big but there were a couple of small ones for the inexperienced people so everyone could catch a wave. Overall, the boys really enjoyed it and can’t wait to do it again sometime soon. Thanks to Mr Forward and Mr Colton for taking us.

Sporting

In the next coming weeks, we come closer to the end of winter sports. This means that finals are just around the corner and we are lucky enough that Koby Hams and Jack Carlson are versing Hamish Murphy in the footy grand final. We also have the majority of people in our house that play hockey. We are just coming up to semifinals and are very keen on winning.  Good luck to the Footy and Hockey boys.

Term Three has been exciting and jam packed filled with events and activities. However, the boys have still had plenty of down time around the house. This time has been filled by playing pool against the supervisor Mr Matthew Ferreira or simply chatting with Mrs Sally Mellows. We have made positive connections with all the supervisors and always look forward to the afternoon. We have also managed to find time to keep up with our schooling commitments during prep and try our hardest not to be distracted. Overall, the house runs smoothly, keep up the good work boys.

I enjoy sharing travel, encouraging the kids to get out and see the world as well.

What is one strength you witness daily in the boarding house?

One strength I witness is the boys make a good community and are - most of the time - friendly and have a laugh across year groups.
