From the Boarding Captains

Darcy's and my time as your Boarding Captains has truly flown by, and the next set of boarding leaders are applying for positions in 2024. I had the absolute joy of attending the Aspiring Leaders’ Workshop on Monday of Week Seven, joining a large and eager group of Year Eleven's for their lunch break. Whilst making the most of the delicious buffet prepared for us, I chatted with some students from Mokare about their year ahead. I was thrilled to witness how excited and enthusiastic the Year Elevens were about leadership, and more so about entering Year Twelve. Being a part of the School's leadership team has given Darcy and I so many unforgettable opportunities this past year, and I am beyond glad that so many Year Elevens are putting themselves out there to become a leader too.

In particular, our boarders, some of whom are already house leaders in our community, are applying for all positions available. By giving it a red hot crack, the Year Eleven boarders are opening themselves up to so many amazing opportunities for their final year of school and I couldn’t be prouder. I have been helping some with their application letters, and it's safe to say that our aspiring boarding leaders are going to contribute great things to the school and wider community in the year to come.

As many of you may know, Darcy and I have partnered up with a local organisation called The Darcy Effect. Founded by Kate Mitchell, The Darcy Effect aims to support rural health systems and families living in remote places with sick children. To get behind this important cause, which impacts many of our boarding families and home towns, GSG Boarding is putting together hospital bags for families going through unexpected hospital stays. When living in rural WA, if a child is rushed to hospital by RFDS or otherwise, families staying in hospitals lack basic toiletries, accessories, activities and the small comforts of home.

We have been advertising for donations in the day school, Daily Notices and The Anchor the past few weeks, and are starting to see some very full collection baskets. However, if you have not yet contributed to this compassionate cause, its not too late! We are wrapping up the donation collection process this week but of course we won’t say no to any more items such as;

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Books and toys
  • Puzzles and colouring-in
  • Phone chargers, etc

As long as they are new and unopened, bring them in. We only ask that no food items are donated.

Additionally, the opportunity for boarding families to be involved is approaching, which includes the delivery of these hospital bags to your local hospital. If you would like to contribute, please get into contact with myself, Darcy or Mr Keatch, including the hospital you would like to visit.

We thank you for your consideration in supporting this project in which Darcy and I aim to give back to the rural communities that contribute so much into our boarding space. We wish all of the Year Eleven boarders the very best with their incoming leadership application results and hope everyone enjoys the final weeks of Term Three.

Ava Smith | Boarding Captain

Term Three is in full swing with everyone coming to the end of their winter sport seasons. In the coming weeks a lot of the boarding students are playing either their last home and away games and some are lucky enough to be able to play finals in any shape or form and in lots of different winter sports.

The Darcy Effect has been advertised in and around the school grounds and not only in the boarding houses but also the day school has received lots of donations. We would like to thank everyone that has donated to this very relevant and good cause that helps the community and other rural organisations in many shapes and forms.

Year Ten group have recently had work experience and a lot of great feedback has come back from it with everyone having lots of different but overall enjoyable experiences. Along with that they have also had to make some very important decisions about their education in the year to come with picking their subjects for the next two years. The Year Eleven’s have been doing some thinking and it is good to see how many boarders are applying for leadership positions in 2024. The Year Twelve’s “lasts” are finally upon us. Although it seems like it has taken a long time to get to the end of school it has suddenly come up on us extremely quickly, with most of us finishing up at the end of the term. Lots of the students are both nervous and excited to finish school and see what the next chapter of their life has for them.

I wish everyone an enjoyable rest of term and a safe and happy holiday with friends and family.
