From the Principal

Dear BMGS Community,

Welcome to this week's Newsletter! As I reflect on yet another week in our school, I am reminded of how dynamic it is. I want to celebrate the accomplishments, creativity, and collaborative spirit that marked the past week. It has been a week of triumph and creativity.

There has been a whirlwind of activities and achievements across all campuses, embodying our school's commitment to holistic education.

Book Week Parade Extravaganza: A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Junior School staff and parents who transformed our campuses into a wonderland of literary magic for the Book Week parade. The collective effort and attention to detail were evident as students paraded as their favourite characters, spreading joy and fostering a love for reading. There were so many exceptional outfits that made the week even brighter. We had everything from Harry Potter, Ben Ten, 101 Dalmatians and even a teacher who wore underpants on the outside of their outfit - yes, he was Captain Underpants (aka Mr Carr).

Junior School Awards

I had the privilege of attending the Junior School Awards Assembly and was thrilled to be able to present the Principal's Award to Jack Lowe in Stage 3. The path to receiving a Principal's Award is not short, demonstrating Jack's commitment to being a learner. Congratulations, Jack - I am so pleased to see you wear that badge and lead this way.

Conclusion of HSC Trial Exams: I applaud our senior students for their dedication and hard work during the HSC Trial Exams. These trials have not only prepared them academically but have also honed their resilience and perseverance. These experiences will be valuable lessons as they progress to their final examinations. Thank you also to all the staff who work behind the scenes organising exams, creating timetables, solving problems and, of course, getting the marking done. Thanks also to the parents for your support as well.

Completion of Major Works: For many of our students, their creativity knows no bounds, and the recent completion of major works in several subjects is a testament to their artistic prowess and dedication. The variety and depth of the projects are awe-inspiring, showcasing the diversity of talents nurtured within our school. Thank you also to our Design & Technology, Art, Drama and Music teams for guiding our Year 12 students through this high-paced, high-pressure season. Congratulations to our students as well - a major work is no small task.

Captivating Music Concert: Last week's music concert was a memorable evening. The enchanting melodies that resonated through the auditorium were a testament to our music department's hard work and our students' dedication. The stage was alive with talent, and the audience had an exquisite musical experience.

HSC Drama Performances: The creative flair of our students shone brightly during the HSC Drama performances. The stage came alive with their unique perspectives, storytelling skills, and artistic expressions. It's heartening to witness the transformative power of drama in action.

Senior School Leadership Team

On Wednesday this week, we thanked our outgoing Year 12 leaders for their work in their portfolios and their service to our school. I am thankful for their contribution.

But, as happens each year, as we farewell one group, we welcome another. Wednesday saw us induct our new leaders, and I congratulate them on their appointments. This year, I have appointed two Captains and six Vice Captains. People have asked me, "why so many?"

Let me explain my logic.

At our school, we believe leadership is a team sport, not an elite club. As a school, we also want to provide enough space and time for our young leaders to share what has traditionally been a heavy load in student leadership. Together, this team will lead; together, this team will grow one another; and together, this team will serve the community here at BMGS.

In Year 12 there is a lot of white noise - noise that can often distract young people from the main game. By distributing the leadership responsibility broader among some very capable young people, I believe we will create space for our students to turn down the white noise long enough and low enough that they can hear that small voice of reason that we often drown out with busyness.

We have broken the Vice-Captaincy roles into three portfolios that align with the values and behaviours of our school. The portfolios are:

  • Courage and Influence

As a Courage and Influence Leader, students will learn to demonstrate fearlessness by championing innovative ideas, tackling challenges head-on, and encouraging fellow students to step out of their comfort zones. They will also support and encourage each of the other members of the Leadership Team and their initiatives.

  • Excellence and Invention

As Excellence and Innovation Leaders, students will be committed to delivering outstanding results and inspiring their peers to achieve the best. This role will foster a continuous improvement culture where creativity and forward-thinking solutions are celebrated. Through developing leadership in our community, these leaders will motivate fellow students to embrace new ideas and strive for excellence in all their endeavours.

  • Community and Accountability.

As Community and Accountability Leaders, students will be a driving force behind creating a supportive environment where every student feels valued and connected. Their role will involve cultivating a culture of respect, empathy, and collaborative spirit. Through developing their leadership, they will inspire fellow students to take ownership of their actions and contribute positively to our BMGS community.

Staff, parents and friends - thank you for the support you will give our leadership team over the coming year.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the past week's achievements, it's important to acknowledge the combined efforts of our students, staff, and parents that make these events and accomplishments possible. Our school thrives on a foundation of collaboration, where every individual plays a pivotal role in creating an environment conducive to learning, growth, and creativity.

The coming weeks promise more excitement, learning, and opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and abilities. We invite you all to stay engaged with our school's activities, support our students, and celebrate their accomplishments.

Thank you for being an integral part of the Blue Mountains Grammar School community. Together, we continue to inspire excellence and shape the future.
