OKTOBERFEST 2023

This week in German lessons, students have been busy making their Oktoberfest hats for our upcoming annual Oktoberfest celebration on Friday, 6th October 2023.

As well as making and decorating their hats, students have been enjoying singing the song ‘Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken’ (My hat, it has three corners’.

Parents/carers are welcome to attend the Oktoberfest assembly to be held in the hall on Oktoberfest day from 9:30 – 10:45 am.

The assembly will involve a Foundation song and dance, a German rock band performance, a ‘Best Dressed’ parade, German poetry recitations, as well as two whole-school Oktoberfest action songs.

What to wear on Oktoberfest day

Students are invited to come dressed in a Bavarian costume (Dirndlkleid or Lederhose), or the German flag colours (black, red, and gold/yellow) or the Bavarian flag colours (blue and white).

Students who have ordered gingerbread hearts or pretzels will receive these on Oktoberfest day.

AGTV German Poetry Competition Regional Final

On Thursday, 7th September nine Rangeview Primary School students participated in the AGTV German Poetry Competition regional final.

This event was held remotely via Zoom. Students were required to recite a German poem to a panel of judges, and were judged according to their pronunciation, intonation, phrasing and overall expression.

Thank you to our German Language Assistant, Frau Josefine Schneider, for her wonderful efforts to prepare our students for this special event.

We are delighted to announce the results of this competition.

As the first and second place winners from Levels 5 and 6 are invited to participate in the State Final German Poetry Competition, the students printed in red above will be able to attend the Austrian Club in Heidelberg on Saturday, 14th October to take part in this exciting event.

We wish Molly, Josephine, Nina and Frank all the best for preparing for the State Final.

Approximately 6 million people go to Oktoberfest each year:

Munich’s busiest time of the year is during Oktoberfest where people from all over the world head to the Bavarian capital to enjoy the event. Locals love it too. In fact, the vast majority of ‘Oktoberfesters’ are German. It gets pretty crowded, but the more the merrier.

The Olympia Looping rollercoaster at the Oktoberfest is the largest portable rollercoaster in the world.

The ride is 1,250 meters long with five loops. Speeds of up to 100 km/h can be reached by up to five trains, which can travel simultaneously and each seat 20 to 28 people. The forces acting on the rapid descents are impressive: Up to 5.2 g's can press on your stomach!
