4 C's Art Exhibition, Bunjil Place
Congratulations to Zahra Bahrami, Farzana Ghulami, Sabira Nazari and Najiba Shaikh of Year 12 for having artworks selected for the 4C’s Cultural Showcase exhibition at Bunjil Place. The exhibition focused on themes of culture, identity, community and belonging.
Zahra Bahrami My Identity
This artwork expresses my own identity, in particular my faith and culture. I arranged a still life of the Afghan flag, the Quran and a tasbih which is held and counted during prayer. These objects represent my sense of belonging to the Muslim and Afghan communities.
Farzana Ghulami Traditional Afghan Dance
This artwork shows two female Afghan dancers wearing cultural dress and performing a traditional dance in a pair. These dances can also be done in a circle. When I am dancing like this, I feel a sense of happiness and belonging to the Afghan community. I enjoy wearing the cultural dress even though it is heavy. I love the patterns and bright colours and the different jewellery made of precious metals.
Sabira Nazari Hazara Woman
This portrait represents Hazara culture and traditions that take place during important family and cultural times such a wedding. The cultural dress that the Hazara woman wears is worn on special occasions and the jewellery made of coins is traditionally a wedding gift from the bride or groom’s mother to the bride. The Australian plants in the background show that the Hazara community keep their traditions alive no matter where they live in the world.
Najiba Shaikh Cultural Patterns I and II
This pair of artworks portray outward signs of Islam. They show two ways in which Muslims express their faith. Both artworks show the head of a Muslim woman draped in a Jilbab, referencing that traditional garment. The joyful colour schemes and large areas of cultural pattern also express Islam, referencing tiled mosques and the fabrics and decorative objects used by Muslims. These artworks are intended to both acknowledge and celebrate.
