The students have been using some of the skills they have been learning about the elements of drama. Students from Year 2 to 6 have been reading and rehearsing Readers’ Theatre scripts. Working on these scripts gives students the opportunity to practise making dialogue sound natural and using their voice and facial expressions to bring a character to life. Meanwhile the Preps have been reenacting the story, Whitney and Britney, Chicken Divas. With support from the story, they have been interpreting the main characters and reenacting the events.
Since we have returned from the break students in all classes have been enjoying beginning their lesson with handclapping games. Apart from being fun, handclapping games have lots of educational and wellbeing benefits as well. Handclapping games help with hand-eye coordination, memory, rhythm and timing, language development, focus and concentration, social interaction and turn taking to name some of the benefits.
What a fun way to learn! Maybe your child can teach you some clapping games (or vice versa).
Victorian State School Spectacular 2025
Our students who have chosen to be part of the Mass Dance section of The Victorian State School Spectacular this year have been working hard at school and at home to learn their dances. These students have been very committed to the Spectacular and practise every Thursday during their lunchtime. On Tuesday, 12th August, they will give us a sneak peek at two of the dances they have been rehearsing. They are so excited to share this with you, and it will be a great opportunity for them to get used to performing in front of an audience. So, if you can make it to Assembly next Tuesday, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Foundation Art News
This term in Art, our Foundation students have been busy exploring the wonderful world of Colour. They began by learning about the primary colours and experimented with mixing them to create secondary colours, which they showcased on colourful colour wheel umbrellas in their rainy day artworks. As part of this project, students also explored watercolour painting techniques, including a wax resist method, to create atmospheric rainy day backgrounds.
Our young artists also recently completed their clay bird sculptures, inspired by the Aboriginal Dreamtime story ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’. Students developed their clay hand-building skills to shape their birds, used fabric to add texture, and painted them beautifully after they were fired in the kiln. A wonderful blend of storytelling, culture and creativity. Amazing work everyone!
At the end of Term 2, the Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Winter Gala Day. Our mixed and girls' soccer teams had a fantastic day at Calloola Reserve in Oakleigh South. They did a fantastic job and were great ambassadors for our school. Both teams won games and were unlucky not to reach the finals. Special mention goes out to Fakih, Gio's Dad, who came along and helped coach on the day.
Our mixed and girl's netball/volley stars teams competed at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve in Murrumbeena. All four teams put in a fantastic effort and came close to making the Grand Finals. The girls' netball team reached the semi-finals and finished in third place. A big shout-out goes to Paula (Kendyl's mum) and Paola (Santi's mum) for their excellent coaching on the day.
During Term 3 the Foundation students will continue to work on their catching, kicking, running and vertical leaping skills in P.E. Students from Years 1-6 will learn the sporting skills needed to play AFL football. Towards the end of the term, students will take part in AFL 9's practice matches.
In Term 3, female students from Years 5/6 are taking part in the 'Confident Girls Netball' program, a netball incursion program run by Netball Victoria. They will take part in 4 one-hour training sessions at school and will have the opportunity to attend a Netball Gala Day at Waverley Netball Centre on Wednesday, August 27th. This program is fully funded by Netball Victoria, and all female students in Years 5/6 are encouraged to participate.
On Tuesday, August 5th, students from Years 3-6 took part in our annual school Athletics Carnival at Davies Reserve, Oakleigh South. The weather was beautiful, and all students did an awesome job. I would like to thank Andrew and Tol Tek (Holly's parents), Paula, Paola and Alyson ( Josh's mum), for helping out on the day. Without the help of these parent volunteers the day would not have been a success, thank you.
Selected students will go on to represent our school at District Athletics on Monday September 1st, at Knox Athletic Centre, Bunjil Way Knoxfield. District athletics team training will take place during most lunchtimes over the next three weeks, providing all team members the best chance to progress to divisional athletics.
