Grade 6

Reading
Recently in Reading, our Grade 6 students explored two powerful picture books by Jackie French – Flood and Drought. Flood tells the story of the devastating impact of rising waters during a natural disaster, while Drought captures the long, harsh silence of the land when no rain comes. Both texts use rich imagery and emotive language to portray the challenges faced by communities and the Australian landscape during extreme weather events.
Students deepened their understanding by examining Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary and responding to a variety of comprehension questions – from literal recall to inferential thinking and reflective responses. They also explored how Jackie French uses vivid imagery to help readers visualise and emotionally connect with the events.
Writing
In Writing, our students became poets! Inspired by the themes of natural disasters, they planned and created their own poetry. They wrote thoughtful clerihew poems, and experimented with free verse poems using extended metaphors to represent floods and droughts in symbolic and creative ways.
‘Floods set upon shore,
Going fast begging for more.
As it spins round and round,
It finally starts setting upon the ground.’

Maths
Over the past two weeks, our Grade 6 students have been learning about number patterns. They've explored how number patterns work in function tables and how to identify and create pattern rules (algorithms).
Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students have learned how to describe patterns using words and algebraic expressions. They've also practised finding missing numbers by applying their function rules.
It's been fantastic to see students developing their logical thinking and confidently explaining the patterns they find.
