Year 5 Newsletter
In our Year 5 English program, we are exploring the rich tapestry of figurative language found in texts. Students are learning to identify and use terminology associated with figurative language encountered in texts. Through activities such as analysing metaphors, similes, and personification, students are developing a deeper understanding of how authors use these literary devices to enhance storytelling. Additionally, we are building background knowledge relating to the immigration of the Afghans and Camels in Northern Australia and the motivations and lives of Chinese immigrants. By examining historical texts and narratives, students are gaining insights into the diverse experiences that have shaped our nation's history. This comprehensive approach not only enriches their comprehension skills but also fosters an appreciation for the cultural and historical contexts that influence literature.
In our Year 5 Mathematics program, we are delving into the world of chance and probability. Students are learning to identify outcomes that are equally likely and to list all possible outcomes of chance experiments, such as rolling dice or flipping coins. These outcomes are then represented as fractions, helping students understand that probabilities range from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). Through hands-on activities like the "Probability Game," students conduct experiments, record results in tally charts, and analyse data to determine the fairness of games. Additionally, problem-solving strategies are emphasized, enabling students to approach mathematical word problems with confidence. Collaborative discussions further enhance their reasoning skills, fostering a deeper understanding of chance and probability concepts.
Year 5 students have had a wonderful Semester 1.
