Grade 4

Reading & Writing – Exploring Poetry
This week, students explored the structure and meaning of poetry, focusing on both literal and inferential understanding. We read The Eagle by Alfred Lord Tennyson and Who Has Seen the Wind by Christina Rossetti. The class enjoyed unpacking the language and imagery, and even imagined what Lord Tennyson himself might have looked like based on the tone and style of his poem. Using these works as inspiration, students then wrote their own poems, experimenting with poetic features such as rhythm, imagery, and personification.
Maths Update – Addition, Subtraction & Equivalence
In Maths, students have been building their understanding of addition and subtraction by working with fact families. This helps them see how numbers are related and how knowing one fact can help solve others. They've been using this strategy to find unknown parts in number sentences, such as missing addends or subtrahends. We’ve also introduced the concept of equivalence, where students are learning that both sides of an equation must have the same value. Using balance-style problems, they’ve been solving equations and explaining their thinking to show a deeper understanding of how numbers work together.
