Grade 2

Hello families of Grade 2,

The Grade 2 students have shown remarkable growth as we near the end of the term. They are not only gaining new skills but also solidifying their understanding of important concepts in every subject area.

In Writing, we consolidated our learning about different poems and how to structure them. Before delving into this, we looked at examples of ‘Acrostic’ and ‘Haiku’ poems. Participating in questioning activities allowed us to break down their structure, providing a better understanding of how to write them.

In Maths, the Grade 2’s have begun learning about measuring capacity. They used containers to compare and order the capacity of everyday items such as rice and water. Students also began estimating how heavy objects can be, through lifting and and feeling them, which is known as ‘hefting’.

InitiaLit

The IntialLit program’s spelling focus has been directed at previously learned digraphs and trigraphs such as the /ow/ and /air/ sounds. After consolidating their knowledge in Storybook with ‘Turtle’s Song’, the Grade 2’s began predicting, reasoning and questioning as well as participating in word work defining: Pounds, Shatter and Feast. In comprehension, students were improving their knowledge on text to text and text to world connections through the use of our RAD reading books. They explored these strategies whilst comparing various texts.

Integrated

In Integrated, we have started exploring technology and how it has changed the world, impacting our lives in areas like health, transportation, and communication. Students were able to create a new piece of technology that would solve a problem, drawing a diagram that explains how the technology would solve a particular problem.

The Grade 2’s have had a productive fortnight!

Kind Regards,

The Year 2 Team
