Year Three

Spotlight on Learning

Year 3 Spotlighting on Learning

Dear families,

This week in our learning, the Damascus and Ephesus communities gathered to celebrate Mass together. During the celebration, we reflected on the Parable of the Mustard Seed, a beautiful reminder that even the smallest actions can grow into something great when nurtured with faith and love.

PE CHANGE

For Week 10 3C and 3D will have sport on TUESDAY June 24 instead of their usual spot. It will return to the usual days for Week 11 and ongoing.

Religion Education

This week, our students have been learning about the Sign of the Cross and the Holy Trinity. These are foundational aspects of our Catholic faith and important expressions of our belief in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We explored how the Sign of the Cross is both a prayer and a reminder that God is always with us. The children practiced making the Sign of the Cross with reverence, understanding that it is a beautiful way to begin and end our prayers. We also began to discover the mystery of the Holy Trinity, three Persons in one God.

Maths

In Mathematics this week, our Year 3 students have been exploring how to collect andorganise data to answer questions. We’ve been learning how to sort information into different types (categorical and numerical) and record it using tools like frequency tables and simple spreadsheets. The students have had opportunities to create a variety of graphs, such as bar graphs and picture graphs, to visually display their findings. They are developing their ability to ask clear survey questions, collect information through observation or by surveying their classmates, and then analyse their graphs to describe what the data shows. It’s been exciting to see students becoming confident data investigators!

English

In English, our Year 3 students have been working on writing summary paragraphs based on the beautiful and important text Finding Our Heart by Thomas Mayor. As part of their learning, students are developing their ability to write structured paragraphs that include a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. This task encourages students to think deeply about the message of the book and express their understanding in their own words. It’s been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as writers and as thoughtful readers.

Integrated Studies

We are exploring important celebrations from around the world as part of our Integrated Studies unit in History. We are learning about Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) and American Independence Day, two vibrant celebrations with rich histories and meaningful traditions. Students are discovering how these events are celebrated, why they are important to people, and how they connect to ideas of freedom, family, and culture. Through storytelling, creative activities, and group discussions, children are developing a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and the significance of commemorations in different communities.

AUSLAN

This week in AUSLAN, our Year 3 students have been developing their communication skills using Australian Sign Language. A big focus has been on learning how to give instructions without needing to sign “YOU”, instead using eye gaze and pointing to refer to people and objects. Through interactive games and fun group activities, students have been practising how to sign clearly and naturally, just like fluent signers do! These games help reinforce the importance of body language, facial expression, and directionality in Auslan. It’s been a great way to build confidence and connection while learning a new language.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR

We are developing important communication skills that support peer support and help-seeking. They are learning to practice ways to communicate that encourage friends to support one another, identify a range of strategies to ask for help and work through problems positively, understand what peer support means and recognise when it’s helpful to take on this role and describe and use strategies to handle situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. We are building these skills so children feel confident and supported in their relationships and know how to seek help when needed.
