Dear Families,
Thank you to the parents who engage with our newsletter every week. The information gives you topic information to have a conversation with you children about what they have learnt at school over the week. Some suggestions around what you can do at home:
Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.
Ask your child to 'retell' the story using their own words.
Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.
Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.
Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.
Religious Education focus: This week we started to learn about St. Thomas' journey of faith. We will celebrate St. Thomas' feast day on the 3rd-4th of July and are hoping to prepare the students for this experience.
English focus:. This week we learnt about 'er' sound as a 'schwa' and a suffix if used at the end of a word. i.e swim-swimmer.
Mathematics focus: This week we learnt about capacity as a measurement tool. Cooking at home is an engaging way to involve children in many learning areas while having fun. Cooking teaches us about procedure, measurement, following instructions and of course patience! At home you can ask your child to fill up different containers with water, talk about how different containers can have different capacities using the words capacity, less, more, the same.
SEL: This week for SEL we have learnt about how people and their families can be different. In the coming weeks, we are hoping to watch the movie Moana in short 10-15 chunks, to base our discussions around 'Personal Strengths', since the movie is rated PG, we would like to ask parents to let teachers know if you do not wish for your child to watch it at school.
History: During Inquiry we learnt about how the land in Australia has changed since European settlement. The end of term craft reflection involves making a 3D artifact that showcase what students have learnt about our past, present and predict the future. Should you wish to replicate this activity at home this tutorial can be of help.
AUSLAN: This week have revised unit 4, in preparation for our end of term assessment.
Religious Education focus: We will continue to learn about 'St. Thomas' journey with Jesus'. We will look particularly look at his journey to the far east and how he helped spread Christianity around South East Asia.
English focus: Next week we will read the book Tom Tom by Rosemary Sullivan. During Phonics, we will focus on sounds air, ere, are as in air, fare and there.
Mathematics focus: Students will learn about Measurement- Time and duration of events.
SEL: Watch Moana in small bursts and learn about personal strengths.
History: We will continue to work with on our Inquiry question based on the book 'My place'.
AUSLAN Focus: Students will be revising signs from unit 4, in preparation for end of term assessment.
