Dear Families,
We look forward to participating in the District Sports Competition this Monday. Students should arrive at school at their normal time in their school sports uniform. The day will be an opportunity to compete, demonstrate sportsmanship, and represent St Thomas the Apostle to the broader Cranbourne community.
For the past few weeks, our students have been working hard to polish off their final assessments ahead of reports and Student, Parent and Teacher Interviews in Week 11, and should feel a sense of accomplishment for taking on this challenging period with resilience and determination.
Congratulations to this week's award winners! Keep up the amazing work!
The excellent preparation and organisation of our Student Art Leadership team paid off with a highly successful Art Club session.
Religious Education Focus:
As we continued to explore Confirmation, our students researched a saint of their choice whose virtues and feats resonated with them.
English Focus:
Reading:
This week, our students learned about words with the Latin base 'aqua', meaning water, and 'tain', meaning hold. They continued to consolidate their grasp on compound and complex sentences.
Writing:
This week, students began reading our new text, Country Town, a picture book that traces the history of a made-up Australian town that combines elements of fact and fiction. Taking inspiration from this book, students are writing their own historical narratives.
Mathematics Focus:
This week, students learnt about cross sections of 3D shapes, and will next week begin a new unit focused on adding and subtracting fractions.
Integrated Studies Focus
This week, our students have been immersed in an exciting historical inquiry as they work collaboratively to research one of Australia's original colonies. In small groups, they are exploring the development of their chosen colony by investigating key events, significant people, and important historical themes. Using both primary and secondary sources, students are building timelines that capture the rich history of each colony. They are challenged to present their findings in a creative and engaging format, showcasing their teamwork and research skills. This hands-on project is helping students deepen their understanding of Australia's colonial past while building essential collaboration and communication skills.
Social & Emotional Learning Focus
Students have been learning about healthy coping strategies that are suitable for different situations.
Auslan Learning Focus
This week, students worked towards understanding that signed languages use a variety of visual features. These include handshapes to show the size and shape of objects, facial expressions to show emotions, and body movements to show how characters act or move.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
