Literacy Skills-Grades 1 & 2

Literacy Skills Lessons

In our literacy skills lessons, we have been working in two groups, each focusing on different aspects of reading and spelling to best support our learning.

One group has been learning about consonant digraphs such as ch, sh, ng, th, ph, and wh. These are pairs of letters that come together to make a single sound. They are now moving on to vowel digraphs, including ai and ay, which also create specific vowel sounds in words.

The other group has been exploring the different ways to read and spell long vowel sounds, helping them understand that the same sound can be represented by different letter combinations—for example, ai, ay, a-e, and ey can all make the long "a" sound.

As part of our learning, we’ve been developing our phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, recognize, and manipulate the individual sounds in words. This is a vital skill for learning to read and spell with confidence.

Each session also includes focused practice in handwriting, reading, spelling, and reading fluency, helping us become more capable and enthusiastic readers and writers.
