Positive Behaviour for Learning

At McAuley we are refreshing our Positive Behaviour for Learning framework.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school approach that helps create a safe, respectful and responsible learning environment. When we have clear, consistent and high expectations for behaviour, students know exactly what is expected of them and can thrive.

At our recent staff meeting we discussed what behaviours our students and teachers want to see at McAuley. From this discussion and our recent staff/parent/student annual improvement survey results, we have developed a list of expectations that we will implement over the year.

Our first focus is around the expectation of calm movement around the school. Students are expected to walk silently within the school building. This will mimise distractions to other learners.

We will be setting high expectations for a variety of behaviours because we believe every child has the ability to succeed—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

At McAuley we already  implement a tiered approach to both our academic and social emotional curriculum (see diagram below). We recognise that student needs vary. When students require academic support for we provide intervention, this is the same for social skill development and PBL supports this approach. The majority of students will easily follow the expectation of walking around the school silently, however some students will need extra support to acheive this. A few students will continue to receive targeted support to acheive these school wide expectations.

REPORTING TO PARENTS

The Common Grade Scale is used across schools in New South Wales to report on student achievement in Years 1 to 10. It provides clear and consistent descriptions of what students have achieved in relation to the outcomes in the NSW syllabus. This aims to help you as parents and carers to understand your child’s progress and identify areas of strength or where additional support might be needed.

The Common Grade Scale describes performance at each of five grade levels.

During each reporting peroid all students have completed tasks that have allowed them to acheive the full range of grades.

Semester 1 Reports will be available on Compass on Friday 27th June, from 4pm.

Parent/ Teacher interviews are scheduled to take place in Week 10 (Monday 30th June and Tuesday 1st July) between 3.30pm and 7pm.

Interview bookings will open at noon on Friday 20th June. Please book in an interview time for you and your child to speak with the classroom teacher about your child’s learning. The bookings will close at 4pm on Thursday 26th June.
