Philanthropy  Club

As Semester One wraps up, the 2025 Philanthropy Captains want to give an update on what we have achieved so far thanks to the kindness and support of the MGC community.

On the 2 April, we held our annual World’s Greatest Shave event. Three brave students cut or shaved their heads, and many others coloured their hair in support of the Leukaemia Foundation and their work raising funds for blood cancer research. Through the donations we received, we raised an incredible $1892 that will help fund critical research.

On 23 May, Philanthropy ran a free-dress day and bake sale in honour of the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation and their Go Grey in May campaign. Through the free dress gold coin donation and our lunchtime bake sale we raised $1032 that will go to the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation and their efforts in funding paediatric brain cancer research and their ongoing support for those currently battling brain cancer.

On 14 September, the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation is hosting their annual ‘Connor’s Run’ as a way to fundraise and honour the foundation’s namesake, Connor. We encourage any and all students, staff members and members of the MGC community to participate, and remind any keen individuals that registration closes on the 14 August.

Additionally, Philanthropy has supported other programs and school events such as the Richmond Brighter Futures Program, where high school students tutor disadvantaged primary school students, and our bake sale at the Environment Portfolio’s annual Pedal Power Cinema.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far by setting up and/or packing up any of our events, baking for or running any of our bake sales, and any students who participated in the Richmond Brighter Futures Program. A special thank you to the brave students who shaved or cut their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave, and to the teachers for their help and support in the first half of this year.

Semester Two will be full of fun, new, philanthropic opportunities such as events held in conjunction with World Vision, collection boxes for ‘Share the Dignity’ and many others. We have already done so much this year thanks to your support, and we hope to keep this momentum going as we go into the second half of this year. Keep an eye out for any emails with more information about upcoming events and ways to get involved.

Chess Club

Chess club is open to all players, no experience necessary. Each Friday we gather in room 102 to play each other and (hopefully) learn some new moves and how to improve from our previous mistakes. Here’s what some students are saying about Chess Club!

I really enjoy Chess Club and I find it a fun, relaxing way to spend Friday lunchtime with my friends.

Alisha

I really enjoy Chess Club because I find it funny when people start yelling at each other.

Ella

Sometimes I get over-excited and start yelling at people.

Come for the food, stay for the chess.

Chess is a game built upon strategy, ego and free food. Chess is love, chess is life. Come to chess club in the big ’25!
