Assistant Principal's Message

Mathematics at MPRPS
At our school, we use the Victorian Curriculum Lesson Plans to ensure all students are learning consistent, high-quality maths. In every lesson, students work on the same core concept, with opportunities to be supported or extended depending on their needs. This means all learners stay connected to the class learning while being appropriately challenged.
For example, during a lesson on multiplication:
- Some students may use arrays or repeated addition to build understanding
- Others may solve more complex word problems or apply their knowledge to new contexts
This approach helps build both confidence and depth of understanding across all learners.
A key part of our maths program is retrieval practice, regularly revisiting previously taught concepts so they move into long-term memory. You might hear your child talking about “warm-ups” or quick review questions at the start of lessons. This is intentional and highly effective in strengthening learning over time.
We also focus on mathematical mindsets. Research shows that students learn maths best when they believe their ability can grow with effort, practice and mistakes. Importantly, children can pick up on adult attitudes so the way we talk about maths matters! Statements like “I’m not a maths person” can unintentionally reinforce fixed thinking, while positive messages help build confidence and resilience.
How you can support at home:
- Ask your child to explain how they solved a problem (not just the answer)
- Practise basic facts regularly (e.g. times tables, pairs to 10,100 ect)
- Look for maths in everyday life — cooking, shopping, telling time
- Encourage effort and persistence when things feel challenging
Working together, we can help students build strong numeracy skills and confidence in mathematics.
