Project Compassion at St Helena's
The Big Walk for Water 2026
On the 25 March, our Year 3–6 students enthusiastically participated in the Big Walk for Water, a fundraising event for Project Compassion. Through a series of water themed‑ relays during Senior Sport, students worked together in their faction teams, laughing, competing, and problem solving‑ their way through activities designed to mimic the challenges faced by millions of people around the world each day.
While the activities were fun and engaging, they also carried an important message. According to Caritas Australia, 703 million people worldwide still live without safe drinking water, making water scarcity one of the most significant challenges affecting global health, education, and opportunity. Many communities must walk long distances each day to collect clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, often a responsibility that falls heavily on women and children.
Project Compassion supports long-term solutions to these challenges. Funds raised help Caritas Australia implement water security initiatives, including building safe wells, installing solar‑ powered pumps, improving sanitation infrastructure, and training local communities to maintain‑ these systems. Through awareness activities such as the Big Walk for Water, schools across Australia stand in solidarity with communities facing water scarcity and step up to contribute to meaningful, sustainable change.
Our students demonstrated compassion, teamwork, and a genuine willingness to learn about the realities faced by others around the world. It was heartening to see them having fun while deepening their understanding of global justice issues.
The Big Walk for Walk will continue Friday the 27 March for our Kindy-Year 2 students.
