ASC Agriculture Livestock Team update

Recently our ASC Livestock Team competed at both the Glen Innes and Armidale Agricultural Shows. As always, our students represented our school so well with immaculate behaviour, presentation and effective teamwork. Our students were very patient at Glen Innes competing in wind and drizzly rain for 3 days including the weekend.

A big congratulations to the team and especially to Jack Clayton and Sophie O’Connell for qualifying to represent the New England at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show in Merino Sheep, Fleece, Fruit and Vegetable and Grain Judging. Well done also to Lola Gaw and Kya Doyle for their success in the local Grain and Meat Sheep judging ring.

A very big thankyou to Mr Travis Murdock (ASC parent) for his continued help with our Livestock Team excursions.

Armidale Show was a big event this year with the celebration of 150 years since it first began. A lot has changed since then! This year we took 20 students along, most of them new to Agriculture. Three ASC Agriculture students proudly represented our school with entering the Junior Young Woman Competition and having great success. Well done Renee Murdock, Aliyah Snape and Chloe Looker. Once again, Jack Clayton and Sophie O’Connell had success in the junior judging showring with their skilful judging of Sheep and Fruit and Veg. A very big congratulations to Darcy Andrews who won the Intermediate Merino Sheep judging and was placed third in the Meat Sheep judging. An excellent result!

Britney Tarrant and Lola Gaw did an outstanding job of presenting our school cattle in the showring and received minor placings. In addition, I was honoured to be asked to judge the Angus Beef Societies under 25 years parader’s competition on the Saturday morning. This was a challenging task with exceptional young cattle enthusiasts in the ring.

As well as livestock, ASC entered our many pumpkins that we planted last year in the fresh produce competition and great success was had! We entered four varieties with the highlight award being that of first place in the heaviest pumpkin competition. It was great to be able to support this section of the show with our ASC family the Andrew’s committing so much time and effort into running this event.

Our ASC Livestock Team is now excited to head to the Sydney Royal Easter Show with our four quality Limousin steers and Berkshire pigs. Our pumpkins will also help to make up the required produce for the huge district displays that are definitely worth seeing if you’re heading to the show this year.

The Sydney Show is the most prestigious Agricultural competition in the Southern Hemisphere. It takes a huge amount of extra prior work for teachers to take students to such an event that is run during the last week of term and over the entire Easter long weekend. ASC last competed in this competition in 2024 where we had huge success and nationwide positive publicity with channel seven, nine and ten television stations.
