Year 6 Camp

Last week the Year 6 students had a wonderful time at Camp Kangaroobie, not far from Warrnambool. On Wednesday, after a visit to the spectacular Twelve Apostles, we arrived at camp.

After setting up their cabins, we walked to the Gellibrand River, where it enters the ocean. The group was introduced to Mugby, basically a game of keepings off between the boys and girls (who had the staff on their side to assist. Although the way they tackled the boys, I don’t think they needed any help!). This was followed by a range of optional activities including sand tobogganing, soccer, cricket, sand sculpturing and, what appeared to be the most fun, splashing each other in the knee-deep river water to cool off. Three hours later, their weary bodies trudged back to camp.

No activities were organised for the evenings as we wanted to give the students as much time as possible to play/hang with their friends. They entertained themselves in the gaga pit, played soccer, table tennis, Foosball and just chatted amongst themselves in their cabins or around the open fire. Following supper, the group hit their beds and surprisingly all fell asleep quickly.

On Thursday the students did four of the five scheduled activities which included canoeing, the Game of Life or Death, Kangaroobie Survivor, an obstacle course and a farm tour. That evening the students again entertained themselves with the above-mentioned activities. Once again after supper, when it was time to hit the hay, the students went to sleep within about 25 minutes, which greatly pleased the teachers again who were also a bit weary.

Students were woken up at 7.00am on Friday so they could pack their bags and do a quick cabin tidy-up before breakfast. Later, they did their final rotation then it was time to get on the bus for a sleep or a bit of a chill time on the way home.

One thing that stood out about this group was how well they all worked and played together and encouraged each other when doing the challenging activities. All in all, Camp Kangaroobie was a great camping experience.
