We did 3 activities. We played an indigenous game called Knacker Knacker, which is a game similar to Tic Tac Toe. We used ink pens to write in copperplate font which was the popular font of that time. We also made medals out of clay that were then sprayed silver.

Lacrosse

On the 5th of November we had our lacrosse tournament. We walked down to Beaumaris secondary College where we met up with the other 5 schools. The field was set up with 6 fields so everyone could play at once. Around 9:30am we started our first match against Beaumaris primary, girls won 19-2. The boys won against Beaumaris primary and the scores were 11-3. Both girls and boys were undefeated all day and we both got into the finals. The boys played Brighton winning 11-7, which got the boys into the grand finale against Sandringham.

The girls played Brighton beach winning, 8-5 and playing Beaumaris in the grand finale but they had gotten better than their first match. In the first half it was 2-4 they were winning, we subbed on and got the scores tied 7-7, so we had to do golden goal and our team ended up winning. Both girls and boys won which got our school the plaque. It was a really fun day versing all the other schools and everyone played well.

On Wednesday the 5th of November. A group of 7 boys and 8 girls headed down to Beaumaris Secondary College to play a lacrosse round robin. Each team played 5 games competing to make the top four. By the end of the 5 games both girls and boy’s teams were sitting at the top of the leader board.

Next, we had the finals the top four teams for the boys were Beaumaris, Brighton Beach, Sandringham and of course Beaumaris North. The boys and girls both won the semi finals convincingly. They both headed off to the finals where they played the top teams. The girls went on to play Beaumaris in the finals and the boys played Sandringham. The boys won the grand final convincingly while the girls went on to a golden goal match with the scores levelled 5-5. The match went back and forth with no one scoring until Beaumaris North had a fast break and managed to score.

On Wednesday the 5th of November the selected year 5s and 6s went to Beaumaris Secondary College for a lacrosse tournament. We had 6 short games. The girls and boys won all their games, we were both in the semi-finals, both girls and boys versed Brighton beach and we both won. Since we both got into the grand final and were the top team we were anyways invited to play at state on the 27th of November.

The girls were versing Beaumaris Primary in the final for the lacrosse trophy. At the end of the final quarter, we were tied 7 – 7 but the boys had won their game against Sandringham so it was all up to us to win the final point. We had to choose our best 4 players for the final point. It was tense but, in the end, Liana scored the winning point and we won the tournament overall.

On Wednesday the 5th of November a group of 15 students from year six and five walked down to Beaumaris Sec where they would compete against other schools in the district. It was a tournament where we would play five games and then a further two games if we were lucky enough to progress to the finals.

Fortunately, both the boys’ team and the girl's team were undefeated during the qualifying matches, meaning we both played off against the fourth placed team. Both the boys and the girls won their game convincingly earning them a spot in the final and a spot in the state championship.

In the grand final the boys won 9-2 against Sandringham east primary school and the girls drew 7 all, making them go into a golden goal where they ended up winning. Altogether it was a great day and a really great experience.

On Wednesday the 5th of the November the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse team walked down to Beaumaris Secondary School to play a round Robbin match against the other schools in our area. We played five games and both teams won them all convincingly, so we moved on to the finals. In the semi-finals the boys won and so did the girls, so we went to the last and most exciting part of the day the grand final. As the final buzzer rang the boys won their game 9-3 but the girls went down to a golden goal but in the end, they got the win so we both got the trophy.

It was hard to choose which great grandparent to talk about as I had four great grandparents who all fought in WW2. Three of them unknowingly fought alongside each other at El Alamein. My great grandfather went to war in Europe in Italy despite hating the whole idea of war, thinking it was futile but going anyway purely for the adventure. He was one of many who faked their age to go to war. He carried around with him a book called The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, he memorised the whole poem and one of messages of the poem is how uncertain life can be - an interesting message for someone at war.

My great-grandfather was a collector, and he held onto many items from the war. He has some pamphlets that were dropped by the Allies onto German lines, encouraging them to surrender and explaining to them how to surrender. The other pamphlet he collected was a "safe passage" pass - explaining to German soldiers how to receive help if they surrendered. And the other item he collected was a shell casing from WW2.

Remembrance Day for me is a time to commemorate my great grandparents and how they served for us all, but also to remember my Great-Grandfather's feelings about how pointless war can be.

My great, great grandfather William Henry Smith fought in World War 1.

He was born in 1891 and sadly passed away in 1958.

William left for the war at Port Melbourne in Saint Kilda.  He fought in the trenches in the Western front.  But just 3-4 months in he got sick and was taken to a hospital in France.

In the trenches those soldiers fought in dark, wet and damp conditions which meant that a lot of soldiers got Trench Foot.  Symptoms of Trench Foot is numbness, tingling, swelling and redness.

Everyone loved being around him and we are so grateful for his sacrifice.
