Year 5 News

A Whirlwind of Adventure and Learning!
What a busy few weeks it has been with lots of fun activities! Our Year 5 students have tackled thrilling physical challenges, sharpened their leadership skills and dived deep into their learning tasks. We hope you enjoy reading about the action-packed period we have just shared.
Maths Masterclass
Chance and Probability
Our young mathematicians have been exploring the fascinating world of chance and probability. Students conducted hands-on chance experiments, tossing coins, rolling dice and drawing cards to investigate and calculate the likelihood of different outcomes. They loved the challenge of applying mathematical reasoning to real-world uncertainty!
Literacy Focus
Embracing the ‘Ugly Animals’
Students recently completed a major Learning Task that put their speaking and listening skills to the test. After researching an ‘ugly animal’ that captured their interest (think blob fish, aye-aye or proboscis monkey), each student created an informative poster and delivered an engaging two-minute speech. We were incredibly impressed by the depth of their research and their confident presentation styles!
Exploring Our Backyard
Bay Play at Ricketts Point
The Year 5s had a fantastic time enjoying the beautiful coastal environment at Ricketts Point for our special Bay Play day. The sun was shining as students participated in three rotating activities:
Beach Games: Cooperative games that fostered teamwork and physical activity.
Kayaking: Paddling through the clear waters, learning basic water safety and coordination.
Rock Pool Investigations: Exploring the diverse marine life in the rock pools, turning over stones to learn about local ecosystems.
It was great fun and the students learnt a lot about the importance of our unique marine sanctuary.
Stepping Up: The Lead It Incursion
We hosted the valuable ‘Lead It’ incursion, specifically designed to prepare our students who are interested in leadership positions for Year 6.
The session, expertly run by Tilda and Daniel, included lots of engaging games and challenges focused on collaboration and communication. Students brainstormed the essential qualities that make up a leader and were reminded that leadership qualities are like muscles which need to be practised. A fun highlight was the personality quiz, where students discovered their leadership style based on different sea creatures: Sea Turtle, Octopus, Dolphin or Shark!
The Main Event
Year 5 Camp Adventure!
The highlight of the last few weeks was undoubtedly our exhilarating stay at Golden Valley Adventure Camp in Flinders! Students faced their fears and made unforgettable memories while participating in high-energy activities:
Tackling Heights: Students soared on the Zip Line, reached new limits on the Vertical Challenge and experienced the ultimate thrill of the Giant Swing. Many students achieved things they thought they couldn't do, demonstrating fantastic resilience and grit.
Bush Skills: We honed our pioneering skills with Hut Building challenges and enjoyed the quintessential camping experience of making Damper and toasting Marshmallows by the fireside.
Evening Fun: Our night-time activities were a huge hit, including a spooky Night Walk and a fun Movie Night. There was also plenty of free time for socialising and enjoying games like Volleyball, which proved extremely popular.
Phew! What a big few weeks! Hopefully as we transition into the second half of the final term we can all enjoy the last few weeks of fun and learning together before the summer break.
