Year 3 Builds an Arcade!

Over the past few weeks, our Year 3 students have been busy designing and building their very own arcade games, all inspired by Caine’s Arcade, a story about a boy who built an entire arcade from cardboard.

We started by learning about inventions and innovations, and how creative ideas can solve problems or make something even better. Students worked in small teams, brainstorming wild ideas through “Crazy 8s,” then planning and building their arcade games out of cardboard, cups, tape, string, and all sorts of recycled materials. From bowling to claw machines and even mini air hockey, every creation was unique and full of imagination.

After days of teamwork, problem-solving, and plenty of tape, the big moment finally arrived: our Year 3 Showcase!

On Friday afternoon, our classroom turned into a lively arcade filled with laughter and excitement. Parents came along to play, and we were so thrilled with how many joined in. It was lovely to see families not only trying out their child’s game but also exploring other games, chatting, cheering, and having fun together. The atmosphere was full of that real arcade buzz!

But the fun didn’t stop there. A few days later, our Year 2 friends came to visit and try out all the games. The Year 3 students proudly explained their rules, demonstrated their creations, and encouraged the Year 2s to have a go. There was so much joy and excitement as the Year 2s played, and it was wonderful to see our Year 3s becoming confident young hosts and designers.

To finish off our unit, students wrote recounts about the experience, reflecting on their teamwork, creativity, and what they learned along the way.

This project was more than just about making games; it was about innovation, collaboration, and joy in learning. We couldn’t be prouder of our creative game-makers!

Well done, Year 3! What a fun and inspiring way to end our unit on How the World Works!
