Year 2 News

Well, What A Week We Have Had !

Where we are in place and time

We had so much fun throughout the Unit of Inquiry – Where we are in place and time with some wonderful activities, lessons and thinking.

The highlight was our Migration Day. The Year 2s looked fabulous dressed in old fashioned clothes, or clothes which represented their heritage, be that traditional or cultural dress, or something else which represented different countries of origin. A recent maths lesson highlighted to us the many and varied countries we originated from, and it was fun to reflect on this on Migration Day.

We started the day excited and ready for our trip. First, we made our passports, decorated our suitcase and made a personalised bag tag. We made sure we all had our passports and our suitcases, packed with five of our most important items.

2A, 2B and 2C all set off in different directions, each class searching for a better place to live. We considered the oval, but it seemed too barren, we weren’t sure that any food would grow here. We visited the Year 3s, but they let us know how remote their classrooms were, so we left. We considered the Prep classrooms, but the locals seemed a little wild! Finally, we went up to the BER. We liked the look of the Year 6 classrooms, but we were assured that it was difficult to find work and that all the jobs were taken.

Next, we had to make our way through customs. We were a little overwhelmed by the strictness of security and we all felt a little nervous. Our bags were checked and we were scanned. The lucky ones went straight through to get their passports stamped. However, some of us had unexpected contraband found in our suitcases. Some children had extra passports, large amounts of money and food. Some Year 2 students were also accused of trying to bring live pets into the country. After some questioning, fortunately, we all had our passports stamped and were welcomed into Australia!

We made our final trip and decided to settle in one of the alternate Year 2 classrooms. Everyone felt happy to have made their journey and we then loved sharing and hearing about the special items students decided to bring in their suitcases. Special items ranged from medals the children were proud to have received, to family photographs to special soft toys many of the students had had since they were babies.

It was a wonderful day and gave the students an insight into what it might feel like to pack everything up and move their lives across the world. We thank the office staff, Kerryn and Nicola, Jenny and Janine and our principals, Mrs Stoppa, Mrs Holt and Mrs McLeod who did an absolutely amazing job of replicating border security! We couldn’t have made the day as special without your input. We know how busy you all are and really appreciate the time taken to make this a special day for Year 2!

We are now heading into our final Unit – How we organise ourselves.

Directional Language

This term, our Year 2 students have been learning all about directional language. They began by brainstorming as many directional words as they could think of, building a strong vocabulary foundation. To put their learning into practice, the students played a Barrier Game — one student described a drawing on their mini whiteboard while their partner tried to recreate it using only the directions given. They quickly discovered just how important it is to give clear and precise instructions!

Next, the students will extend their learning by exploring grid references, coordinates, and compass directions on maps. They are learning how to use coordinates and compass directions to read and create their own maps.
