Years 2 & 3

We have continued to explore poetry over the past couple of weeks, reading My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson and There once was a puffin by Florence Page Jaques. Our focus has been on rhythm and phrasing. We also began exploring the haiku genre of poetry. In relation to this, there were some minds "officially blown" (their words) to discover the connection between Asia the continent and Japan the country, as well as the plethora of familiar activities, technologies, and characters that come from Japan!! It was great to see the students connecting their poetry learning with the real world and their own lives in a meaningful way. Learning that haiku aims to promote mindfulness and calm, we were also able to connect haiku with our Wellbeing focus on self-awareness and self-regulation.
The students used the text they had previously edited about iron to publish their completed informational writing piece about iron. Students used their developing skills in Book Creator or PowerPoint to digitally produce and publish texts. This task was much enjoyed and students were rightly very proud of the snazzy books they produced! We then had a lovely shared reading session with the F-1 class in which the 2-3 students read their books aloud to the younger students. Circulating around the room and listening to the students, I was impressed by and proud of the clear and confident way the 2-3 students read their books and provided extra clarifying details for their listeners. This was a terrific activity to finish off our informational writing unit.
In Maths we have begun to systematically explore division, connecting the sharing of collections with division number sentences. Students have worked diligently and persistently at these tasks. We have moved on to drawing these equations using arrays. We have talked about the meaning of the word 'representing' and that we can used mathematical pictures and language to show the same thing in different ways. Students have also continued to enjoy practicing and mastering more multiplication facts.
