School-wide Positive Behaviour Support

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support framework
School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe, supportive learning cultures. SWPBS assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
When SWPBS is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:
Gisborne Secondary College Merit System
Gisborne Secondary College has a Merit system which rewards students who display our core values — Respect, Achievement, Innovation, and Diversity — through everyday actions and positive contributions to the school community. By displaying these values consistently, students not only contribute positively to school culture but also earn recognition for their personal growth and character.
Respect can be shown by consistently demonstrating courtesy and consideration. Students earn merits by listening attentively in class, following instructions the first time, and treating peers, teachers, and school property with care. Simple behaviours such as using polite language, resolving conflicts calmly, and helping younger students all reflect a respectful attitude.
Achievement is demonstrated when students show determination, effort, and pride in their learning. Merits may be awarded for completing classwork to a high standard, meeting deadlines, and persevering through challenging tasks. Participation in school competitions, extracurricular clubs, or revision sessions also shows ambition and commitment. Students who take responsibility for their progress—seeking feedback, independently improving their work, and supporting classmates—embody the value of achievement.
To display Innovation, students should demonstrate creativity, problem-solving, and a willingness to try new approaches. They may earn merits by contributing original ideas in lessons, experimenting with new learning strategies, or using technology responsibly to enhance their work. Taking initiative in group tasks, designing solutions in STEM activities, or proposing improvements to school life are all practical examples of innovation.
Finally, students show Diversity by celebrating differences and creating an inclusive atmosphere. Merits may be given to those who work well with a wide range of peers, show empathy, and challenge unfair behaviour. Encouraging others to share their perspectives, participating in cultural events, and being open-minded during discussions all help foster a respectful and diverse community.
Top Merit performers at each year level from across the academic year will be rewarded at the annual Gisborne Secondary College Awards Night in December.
