Year 1/2 Learning Community
Growing our brains with Mrs Dallas, Mrs J, and Mrs Jacobs!
On 7th November, the Year 2 students had their first taste of what camp might be like in Years 3-6! We had a sleep-in at the school, which for some students was the first time they had slept away from family. This can be an overwhelming and daunting rite of passage for students, so having this experience close to home is definitely important!
After we shared a BBQ dinner with our families, students said goodbye to their grownups and commenced the fun!
🔍 A scavenger hunt around the school to work on our orienteering skills. Thanks to our school captains and Mrs Rush for organising this cleverly disguised learning!
🍢 Making our dessert - fruit kebabs with marshmallows and sprinkes
🪩 Disco Dance Party with music from the infamous DJ Rush
🍿 Popcorn and a movie on the big projector screen, just like the real movies!
After all the fun, it was lights out and off to the land of Nod (if you're old enough to remember that!). In the morning, it was breakfast to fill our hungry bellies (some were ready for that at 6:30am!) and then the inevitable fight with rolling up sleeping bags and mattresses - why do they never fit back into the same bag? It's a mystery of the Universe.
We would like to send a HUGE shoutout to Mr Shuttleworth for manning the tongs to cook our delicious dinner, and Mrs Rush for all her many talents and making sure everyone had the best time! We'd also like to send flowers to Mrs Jacobs, Mrs J and Mrs Dallas for helping to organise and coordinate our Year 2 Sleep In, and braving the concrete floors to make sure this experience was wonderful for our students! 💐
Stay tuned for more photos in our next newsletter!

This week in Maths, students began learning about the different ways we can solve addition problems. We explored the 100 facts up to 10+10, and were surprised to learn how many of those facts we can solve straight away in our heads! We already know how to:
+ add 1, 2, or 3 more to any number up to 20
+ add two numbers to make our Friends of 10
+ calculate doubles up to 10
Two new strategies we are learning is the 'near doubles' strategy and the 'bridging through ten' strategy. Take a look at our learning! We're working really hard on being able to do these strategies in our heads, but using tens frames to begin with is the best way to learn!

Last week, Stázka brought in a small, furry visitor for her show and tell. She had an interesting development, where it was discovered that Flossy was not actually a female guinea pig as we were led to believe, but a male! So, a quick name change and a relocation to a different guinea pig house, and we now have Phillip! He was very cute and everyone enjoyed giving Phillip a little pat as he went around the circle.
Thanks so much to Vera, Carmichael and Stázka for our furry friend visit!
