When children commence their education journey at Magill, they are introduced to What’s the Buzz? This program is written for all children aged from four to eight years. This is because all human beings benefit from working within a Social Emotional Learning framework and being taught these vital human skills. Through What’s the Buzz children are introduced to Archie and Castle Rock School. Each week Archie learns how to navigate different situations: with the enthusiastic help of our reception children at Magill.

What's the Buzz is designed to build three essential competencies:

  1. Social observation (social referencing): when an individual pays attention to what’s happening around them, and then tries to fit their behaviour to match that context.

  2. Social thinking: how the social and emotional behaviour of others is understood. A child able to use flexible and resilient social cognition, for example, they can ‘read between the lines'. They can accurately work out what happened and what the likely intent was.

  3. Social action: combines the confidence to carry out the pro-social behaviour when required. What’s the Buzz offers multiple opportunities for children to understand and practice social skills.

Each week, children discuss various situations before practicing strategies that might help. Explicitly teaching children SEL so they may develop positive problem-solving skills to transfer into their everyday lives, is an essential part of any child’s education. Our reception children enjoy the program and benefit from it.
