Selamat Siang semuanya,
Exploring Living Things in Year 1/2 Biology
This term, our Year 1/2 students have been busy exploring the fascinating world of living things in Biology. They’ve been learning about the survival needs of familiar insects and spiders found right here in our school environment. During a scavenger hunt, students searched for living things and even discovered a spectacular bird’s nest in action! Everyone was amazed by the variety of creatures, especially the many different types of spiders, hiding in plain sight once we took a closer look.
Last week, all Year 1/2 classes began an exciting new project: hatching their very own sea monkeys to keep as class pets for the remainder of the term. Students discussed their natural habitat, dietary requirements, the importance of oxygenation in water, and how to maintain a healthy environment for them to thrive.
Our young scientists made some very clever predictions about what sea monkeys might be, where they come from, and what they eat. There’s a real buzz of excitement in the classrooms as students observe and record the growth of their new aquatic pets. We can’t wait to see what they discover next!
Amazing Animal Adaptations in Years 5/6
Our Year 5/6 students are having an absolute blast this term as they dive into the fascinating world of animal adaptations! They’ve been learning to identify both physical and behavioural adaptations in a range of familiar animals and exploring how these traits help animals survive in their environments.
In Week 2, students took part in an exciting “Bird Beak Investigation,” where they mimicked different types of bird beaks and tested how well each could pick up various food sources. This hands-on activity helped students understand how beak structure and shape influence survival in different habitats. They collected data and presented their results in graphs, identifying patterns in food preferences and making predictions about which birds might thrive in particular environments.
Students also conducted a “Penguin Huddle Experiment,” comparing the body heat of a lone penguin to that of a penguin in a huddle. Using thermometers, they recorded temperature changes to explore how penguins stay warm in icy conditions, a chilly but fun investigation!
This week, students have been exploring mimicry and camouflage through a very engaging M&Ms vs. Skittles experiment. Acting as predators, they had to distinguish between “safe” and “poisonous” prey, discovering just how effective camouflage can be in nature.
Check out the photos below, our budding scientists have been learning a lot and having heaps of fun along the way!
